Luz makes a surprised chirping noise in the back of her throat and pauses her scribbling to gently touch the inside of Amity’s elbow. 'Sorry if I startled you,' it says, and then she’s back hurriedly scratching on her own paper, tongue sticking out slightly.
It’s the first of their shared gestures that act as a stand in for absent communication, though neither of them note its significance at the time.
Amity huffs in amusement and angles her notebook so it’s easier for the other girl to read.

Today had been a truly awful day. Luz never thought in a million years that she'd be able to stand up to Boscha, though that bitch got exactly what she deserved - hitting the dirt, blood streaming from her nose, the pain that she must have had to endure. Luz had unleashed her wrath in a way she never thought she'd be able to, and in her opinion, it payed off in more ways than one. Perhaps today's fearsome storm was more than a sign of pain and humiliation after all.
Now sat in front of Principal Hal's office, Luz began to realise the true depth of the situation - the thoughts that lingered from the encounter with that jock bitch and her fucking cronies stabbing at her mind and tearing wounds into every region of her aching body. At least Vee was safe - Luz not only doing what she did not only for herself, but for her sister. They had both been hurt by what Boscha said, and that motherfucker absolutely paid for it.
Though even if Luz's day was a mix of accomplishment and mental torture, things were about to get a lot more interesting. Sat next to Luz? A self-proclaimed bad girl with an interesting attitude and an even more complex personality - ready and raring to start afresh in Connecticut...
