I don’t. Well. That’s not strictly true – the uncontrolled self-sustaining chain reaction of combining hydrogen isotopes forming into helium under truly extreme temperatures see to that. It wasn’t even thermonuclear. Leave it Scaldra to use the second-rate alternative and still manage to kill so very many people. It killed me. Correction – it will kill me. Would’ve? I do not know.
But I don’t. I do but I don’t, and I am different because of it. I am different before it, and I am different after it.

As time passes for Judy Alvarez following the events of I Promise, a series of events unfold during two key moments in her life which echo one another, even as she finds herself in very different phases of her life during those events. But as her life presents her with unexpected challenges, she will ultimately face the question of what purpose can be found in life when so much of it is anchored to the past.

Summary
This story takes place immediately following the Star Ending. Judy and V set out to confront the realities of their relationship and the future that awaits them.
In the arid desert outside of Night City, Judy and V are trying to make a new life for themselves as V's condition steadily deteriorates. Chasing down every lead they can find, they must eventually decide how far to go as they find themselves questioning what purpose can be found in both life and death. Time will become both their greatest ally and their greatest enemy as they rage against the inevitable fate that awaits us all.
