Ilya has never been a good sleeper, and tonight he just isn't tired enough. Every time he closes his eyes, Shane is there. And that fatal fucking tuna melt. It's been three weeks. Ilya is fine about it, he doesn't need Shane. They were never really anything anyway. None of which explains why, alone in this hotel room, Shane is all he can think about.
So he gives up on sleep and heads for the hotel gym. On the way he finds a piano in an empty ballroom and sits down to play, the way his mother used to when she wanted to feel calm. Thinking he's alone, he lets himself have this. He plays, he sings. He cries to stupid Justin Bieber. And he never sees the hotel clerk in the doorway, filming.
The next morning Shane walks into a locker room humming with energy. His teammates are huddled around Comeau's phone, laughing at something. It's Rozanov, alone in a hotel ballroom, playing piano and singing and crying. One minute of shaky footage takes Shane completely apart. He did this. And there is nothing he won't do to never see Ilya that alone again. He will not be that ghost Ilya sings about.

Shane and Ilya's weekend plans are derailed when Ilya gets sick and a lot of different things unfold from there that test not only their relationship but that with those around them, the hockey world and the general public.
Set in a similar timeline to Role Model/TLG bringing in a whole bunch of different characters and storylines.
A serious illness fic with some graphic medical details including vomit and intense stuff re mental health - CWs with each chapter. Will be HEA but angsty along the way, a whole lot of hurt/comfort and a good amount of silliness/crackfic elements 💖

Shane’s sensible, all-wheel drive, good-in-the-snow car was sitting in the garage when Ilya pulled in.
Ilya winced.
There was a reason he’d said no when Shane offered to drive out tonight. It was the same reason Shane had agreed so quickly it was obvious he hadn’t really wanted to come. Since Boxing Day, they’d been stuck in a fight-apologize-make up-go quiet-fight again cycle that was as frustrating as it was heartbreaking. They’d been quiet for a week now, which meant they were just about due for a fight. Ilya wasn’t sure they could survive another fight.
He winced again when he saw that Shane was still in his car, and had seen the first wince.
They’d definitely fight now.
“Sorry,” Shane said as they both exited their cars. “I know we said… I just needed to talk to you tonight and I didn’t want to do this on the phone.”
Oh.
Not a fight, then.
A break up.
No wonder Shane looked so sad.

The second Shane hit the ice, Ilya knew something was wrong. Bood didn’t mean to hit him, it was a clean play and an even cleaner hit. A regular hockey hit. But the way Shane landed and slid into the boards, seeing the blood but not knowing where it was coming from, had Ilya’s heart stopping. Even now, almost three hours later, it didn’t feel like his heart had started again. He could hear Bood in the bed next to him asking him something, but all he could do was refresh the tab ‘shane hollander injury update’ and hope some news article somehow leaked information. He knew he didn’t actually want that to happen because Shane deserved privacy, but he was dying inside not knowing if his boyfriend was okay.

All Shane knew was he was in pain, the medication wasn’t masking it, and he needed Ilya. His parents were both in the room, as was Hayden, doing their best to figure out how to get ‘ily to the hospital.
