Summary
After two years in Pittsburgh, Mel’s ready for a serious relationship. Frank would love nothing more than to be that guy for her except he’s six months out from his second relapse and trying to do things right this time around. When Mel brings her new flame to the ED’s holiday party, Frank’s possessiveness gets the best of him, and it only gets worse from there.

Summary
“You've got a date tonight?” he asked.
“With a guy named Tony DiFiore,” she said. “He asked me out at the grocery store last week.”
Something deep behind his ribs tightened. This Tony guy asked her out last week. Days ago. They’d hung out three times since then, and worked together almost every single day. Mel with her hair down, sitting across from someone who wasn't him, grinning when they made her laugh. She had the right.
Mel was still looking at him. “Do you think I should go?”
“What's the worst that could happen?”
He said that. He actually fucking said that.
And now there was no way for him to take it back.

three years ago, frank langdon was one win away from being the most decorated pro in dancing with the stars history.
then he fucked up his back, lost the trophy and his marriage, went to rehab, and came back just in time to have the worst season of his career.
he used to be the guy who could make a dancer out of anyone, but after last season he's not so sure that's true anymore. so when he gets paired with melissa king, a former child star turned novelist who hasn't danced a day in her life, frank isn't exactly thrilled—especially when his ex-wife gets handed the biggest ringer of the season and a very real shot at stealing the record he still thinks should've been his.
it doesn't take long for frank and mel's natural chemistry to set the internet rumour mill ablaze, and frank figures there's no harm in feeding the flames a little if it gets them votes. and maybe even the mirrorball.
what could go wrong?

Summary
“It would have to be a secret.” He says, doing his best to keep his face neutral.
“I’m good at keeping secrets.”
Langdon closes his eyes, a pained expression on his face, “Mel.”
“What?”
“You can’t — you deserve better than this.”
“I want you,” she says again, imbuing each word with as much sincerity as she can so it gets through his thick skull. Actions speak louder than words, so she seals it with a soft kiss. His eyes are still closed, mouth parted when she pulls back, “I’ll take whatever you can give me. I mean it. I promise.”

Summary
“I’m—we’re glad you’re back.” She smiled, adjusting her stethoscope against her neck. I’m glad you’re back, is what he knows she was going to say. It tugs at his chest. Knowing there was a person in this emergency department that he didn’t destroy his entire reputation with made him a little bit less anxious about today. Even if said person only knew him for exactly one whole shift.
Frank Langdon is very normal about Mel King.

“I’m okay, Frank.” With a nervous laugh, she asks, “Do you really think I wouldn’t tell you if something was wrong?”
He pulls back to look at her, eyes flitting over her face.
“Promise?”
And, well, Mel can’t bring herself to make a promise to him when she knows it’s one already broken.
Shortly after realizing she’s in love with Frank, Mel begins experiencing some unusual symptoms.

“I had a baby when I was fifteen. Remember?” she cocked her head to the side, like some kind of loveable Instagram puppy, “Have I never brought that up?”
Frank felt woozy, embarrassment flooding his chest, his cheeks hot and hands sweaty, “Uh, no, it never came up.”
“Oh, there’s Kiara— we’re still carpooling tonight, right, Dr. Langdon?”

Frank learns something new about Mel. After that, he has to know everything about her.

Summary
“Frank,” she swallows, her mouth feeling suddenly dry. “What are we doing here?”
They’re so close now with his breath fanning over her face; she can feel how nervous he is.
“I really don’t know.”
She fists her hand in his shirt, scared to do anything else but anchor herself to him. He’s normally so calm and collected, someone she’d always go to if she needs advice, but right now, she can sense the hesitation radiating off of him. She knows it has to be her move. It’s her line to cross. Right outside her front door.
Mel rests her forehead against his and she nudges his nose with hers, impossibly close. Raindrops start to freckle the sidewalk. It’s now or never, and Mel decides she wants now — any part of him she can get, if only for a moment.

“No?” He likes to tease her. “I’m a married man, Mel. I have two kids with Abby. We own a house together.”
Each fact he spits out makes her weaker, moaning and closing in on something strong.
“Mel, we’re filming a sex tape. I literally have proof that I’m cheating. If she ever goes through my phone…” he whistles, like it’s a lost cause. “My life’s fucking over if she finds out.”
Mel babbles against his shoulder, lost in her own warm pleasure stirring in her center, “Need’me more- more than her.”

Summary
He doesn’t know why he does it, says, “Let me,” and gestures for her to turn around. He thinks she’ll wave him off, tell him not to worry, that she can do it herself.
But she doesn’t.
She turns around so her back is to him, and he takes a step closer, reaching up to grab onto her braid, slowly sliding the hair tie off.
He puts it on his wrist, next to the one he already has on, and the plait almost falls apart on its own, but he can’t help putting his hands in her hair, undoing the braid and running his fingers through the strands gently.
“There you go,” he says quietly once her hair is loose around her shoulders.
She sighs and leans into him, her back against his chest, and tilts her head to rest on his shoulder.

Summary
Sometimes she'll meet a kid and wonder.
It’s usually something small that catches her; a familiar shape to their eyes, the exact tilt of their smile, a little mannerism that makes something snag for a second before she brushes it off.
Though, it doesn't even cross her mind when she meets Penny Langdon. She just sees a little girl with blonde pigtails and pink glasses standing beside her father, and all Mel thinks is that she's cute.

“It would be handy just to skip all the nonsense,” she says without thinking, looking back down at her laptop.
Langdon leans forward a little. “Skip the nonsense, how?”
Mel can feel herself getting warm, her cheeks flushing. “I think you know how,” she says evasively. They all think she’s some sheltered virgin here, like she hasn’t lived a life outside these ED walls. “Friends with benefits isn’t that uncommon.”

“I guess I could see if one of my friends is amenable to helping,” Mel continues, and Frank whites out. Sirens in his head, DEFCON 1 or 5 or whichever was the highest, do not pass go. “But that seems like a lot to ask.”
“I, uh, I wouldn’t mind,” Frank hears himself say. “Just, uh, you know, to help. As your friend. But no pressure, I know it might be weird.”
“That’s so nice of you.” Mel sounds genuinely touched, her lips curving up into a soft smile, her eyes glistening up at him, and Frank has never felt like a worse person.

Summary
Mel looked up and that was her first memory of Frank Langdon. His handsome face smiling down at the two girls from over the vines and leaves. He spoke softly and even toned, and the fear Mel had that they'd get in trouble was immediately soothed by the kindness in his eyes and smile.
"It looks like a bad cucumber," Becca informed him.
He laughed and motioned the girls over to the other side of the fence where it was easier to see into his yard, and then pointed at another baby melon.
"If you're careful with them, they get bigger and turn into proper watermelons," he explained, "but you have to be gentle with them when they're babies like this."
