A growl of frustration leaves her lips as she pulls her hair, “Fine! I’m in love with two boys and I want one of them to kiss me for Christmas but I don’t know which one I want and neither of them are interested in me anyways! Are you happy now?” She looks at him, tears falling down her cheeks.
He wipes her tears, resting his forehead on hers, his voice a whisper compared to her previous shouting, “…would it help if you knew I was in the same situation?”
A watery laugh, “You love two boys?”
“Ha ha, very funny,” he rolls his eyes, though a smile tugs at his lips. “Two girls, actually. Both are insanely OP, amazing, and entirely outside of my league.”
“Same. I’m just a pauper; they’re a prince and a knight. So far out of reach to a lowly peasant like me.”
He flicks her nose, causing a startled squeak to leave her lips. “Don’t talk badly about my princess.”

Fair warning that if you read Innocent after the others, it will probably hurt worse. It hurts enough without the backstory - says the author who cried while writing itI would not read Innocent after "You look familiar." "Like your dead girlfriend." or there might be spoilers.
Take the World and Redefine It has spoilers for every other part in the series, but it should be able to stand alone as well. Definitely needs to come after, at minimum, "You look familiar." "Like your dead girlfriend." if you do decide to read more than one.
