Summary
Twenty to thirty years. She had done the math in that courtroom and landed on thirty-seven and let herself exhale for the first time in years. She had been seventeen and wearing a blouse her mother had pressed the night before because her mother had needed something to do with her hands in the same way her Nanay was cooking all day, and she had sat in the second row and listened to the sentence and let the number settle over her like something solid. Like a foundation. Like something she could build on top of.
She was twenty-eight.
And he had been good.

Summary
The drawings stared at Trinity with their crayon and marker and 2B pencil, warm and unjudgmental. Sometimes, when shift really sucked, she’d head to her locker and look at them, and they’d help.
No matter what anyone screamed at her, no matter what awful shit her mind cooked up at 2am, Santos had been a good doctor for those children. Some days, it was the only thing that kept her afloat.

Summary
When Garcia exited the OR after the last surgery of the day, she was faced with Whitaker.
"Whitaker, what brought you here?”
"I—I’m sorry, I didn’t want to intrude. Can I talk to you for a second?”
“We are talking, Whitaker. Spill it.”
“It’s about Trinity. I don’t know what you said to her, but you’re the only person I can talk to about this.”
“I didn’t say anything to her. She said—”
“I saw her take something from the suture drawer earlier. I’m afraid it was a scalpel.”A fix-it about fear, miscommunication, and two people who are made for each other but terrible at admitting it

“I can treat myself. It isnt– It isn’t that bad,” she mutters through clenched teeth; she doesn’t know who she thinks she’s fooling with the shakiness in her voice, and she can feel them all looking at her, scrutinising her, and what she wouldn’t do to get out of that room right fucking now.
With her luck, of course, it follows that she’s been stabbed in the one place littered with scars in all stages of healing.
..........
Trinity Santos is down on her luck. An injury from hands other than her own, an overbearing roommate, and the one person she tried desperately to push away now far too close for comfort.

Summary
Trinity Santos is very good at compartmentalizing. She has to be, it’s how she survives the ER, the memories, and everything she’s never said out loud. Then a fourteen-year-old girl comes in, beaten and broken for something she cannot control, and Trinity stays.
What starts as a routine check-in turns into something far more personal, as Trinity finds herself telling the kind of story she’s spent years burying.
Because this time, someone needs to hear it. And somewhere down the hall, Yolanda Garcia hears just enough to realize there’s a whole part of the woman she loves she’s never been allowed to see.

Summary
Trinity moved to intercept, but it was too late. His hand managed to grab a hand full of the nurse's hair before yanking her back and toward his arms. For a moment, Trinity thought he would succeed. That the man would manage to get the nurse into his arms. But despite everything — the strength, the pain, the lack of air — the nurse fought, yanking her own head forward before reaching for Trinity with teary eyes.
“Hu—“ She coughed. “Hoop—“
An action that lasted a second. A mere second, but felt like forever. Trinity knew at that moment that she would never be able to forget those big, scared brown eyes. Tearfilled, as they looked at Trinity with desperation.
It didn’t matter that Langdon had gotten away with endangering patients and stealing drugs. That Garcia had thrown her own words back at her and it had stung. That she might repeat her R2 year before even starting it.
It didn’t matter that this man was bigger, stronger, and angrier than her. A hand had clasped her own, digging their nails into her wrist with desperation.
Nothing mattered except protecting this nurse.
Trinity launched.

She thought about the baby again. About how soft she'd felt. About the wanting.
You don't get to want things, she thought, not for the first time. People like you don't get to want things. You know what you are.
A failure. That was the word. Not the surgery — never the surgery, the surgery was the one place she was not a failure, the one place her hands did exactly what she asked them to, and the outcome made sense, and the variables were manageable. Everything else. Every soft human thing she had ever tried to do. She was so tired of being competent in one room and catastrophic in every other. -
