Summary
“It’s not quite that simple,” Ford says, turning to look back at his drink. “If the portal is turned back on, it could give Bill a path through to whatever world it’s turned on in. It’s not as easy as turning it on and you get to go home. It’s the needs of the many versus the needs of the few. He has to keep the world safe from Bill. I can understand why he has to leave you here.”
He winces a little as soon as he says the last part, and braces himself. He expects a glare, or for Stan to snap at him, or anything similar. Something that shows he doesn’t understand the sacrifice part of all this. But instead, Stan laughs, a strange mix of fond and sad, and takes another swig of his beer.
“God, Poindexter,” he says. “You’ve been out here almost thirty years and you still haven’t learned a damn thing, have you?”

Stan’s been a conman for most of his life, has manipulated enough people to know when he’s being manipulated himself, even if Mabel’s not doing it on purpose. She’s found out his secret now—not only about Ford and the portal, but about how he’s been carrying them like a hole all these years, how he’s felt small in this house that’s too big for one person with its weird drafty windows and echoing walls, that until this summer, he’d spend months—sometimes years—talking to his own reflection in the mirror whenever he could bring himself to look at it, just to fill the quiet.
She knows it. She’s pulling him right by his guts, and he feels himself start to relent. “There’s not much to do now that his injuries are fixed up, ‘sides from pour soup down his throat and, ya know, clean him. I don’t even talk to him really. I just kinda...keep him company.”
“I can do that! I could read him a story!”
“Kid…”

Stan’s next shout feels more like a scream, desperate and frightened and tearing his throat on the way out: “Ford, please! Come on! Stanford, you can’t do this to me, not again—Stanford!”
Something slams into him, and he hits the deck hard. His first instinct is, naturally, to punch—but he doesn’t get that far. As soon as he tries to scramble back to his feet, a knee wedges itself into his back and two hands seize tightly on his shoulders and press him down. A low, dangerous growl reverberates around him, and he freezes. Shit. Shit.
...are there werewolves this far out on the ocean?
But when he cranes to see over his shoulder, he does not see a werewolf. Instead, he sees—

ford can’t stop thinking about old yeller that night, staring up at the glow-in-the-dark stars on their ceiling. he couldn’t do it, he thinks. he couldn’t ever shoot his own dog, no matter what.
“well,” stanley says pragmatically the next morning, pretending like he doesn’t care as much as ford knows he does, “since he was sufferin’ and all, it was really better for him to be dead, wasn’t it? not much point in being alive if your whole life is terrible and you’re a danger to everybody you ever loved.”
something cold and sharp takes up residence in ford’s stomach. he doesn’t like hearing stanley say stuff like that. he doesn’t like it at all.
“i wouldn’t do it,” ford insists. “no matter what, i wouldn’t. there’s always another way.”
“heh. yeah, i bet you’d find another way, brainiac,” stanley teases, reaching over to muss ford’s hair. ford swats him away. stanley can make fun all he wants—ford still spends all night thinking about cures for rabies.
