Ever since Tom had entered into service at Downton he had heard stories of Thomas's bullying, of his cunning deceit, of his not-so-secret inner desires. But now it occurred to Tom that he and Thomas were of an age, and they had known each other for many a year, and in any circumstances other than master and servant they may have been acquaintances, even friends.
Or: Thomas notices Sybbie's treatment by Nanny West, but instead of going to Cora, he tells Tom. This is the beginning of a friendship neither man expected.

Summary
Apparently now that Alfred was trying to take this cooking test at the Ritz, he couldn’t be arsed to be a real footman anymore.
Whenever he wanted to gallivant off to the kitchens, he was allowed to skive off, leaving Jimmy to do everything. And Mr Barrow wasn’t even sympathetic to Jimmy’s plight! If anything he enjoyed it, or at least the results of it, if meals lately were any indication.
Jimmy could not abide that.
