Adrian lingers at the entrance of Rocky's workshop, clicking their claws nervously.
"The Recordkeepers took Grace away earlier," they chitter. "They had him try on his mating ceremony outfit. Apparently, the tailors finished it just a few cycles ago."
Rocky stills—his tools hovering precariously over half-soldered xenonite, current task forgotten. Equal parts dread and desire wash over him, and he shudders at the mental waveform being conjured. "And what did you think?"
Softly and sadly, Adrian admits, "Grace sounded beautiful in it. Beautiful in the sense that a butterfly is beautiful when its wings are pinned to a base for display. A gorgeous specimen, twisted to fit standards it was never meant to conform to."
Or: Arranged marriages are common practice on Erid. It should come as no surprise when Rocky and Adrian are made to take Grace as their mate.

"Red," I repeated. "Like astrophage."
If our meeting was truly written in the red of astrophage, then it would mean that the stars started dying for us—that the entire galaxy mourned for them by singing a dirge, and it was loud enough to be heard in the vast silence of the Big Nothing.
Perhaps the universe was torn in two a long time ago and is trying to pull the broken halves back together. For everything comes from stardust, from planets and moons to humans and Eridians. For across trillions of miles' worth of space and billions of years' worth of time, we existed at just the right parameters to have met each other. Then, perhaps the universe made me to love you, and perhaps the universe made you to be loved.
Perhaps that is what you call fate.
Or: Grace confesses his love. Rocky struggles to do the same, though not for the reasons you might think.

We bickered back and forth. Up until I said, "Sweet dreams, Rock."
You paused for a bit, then chittered curiously, "No understand word."
I had begun drifting off already, but that kept me awake for a bit longer. "Dreams? Hm…"
It only occurred to me then that I never told you just how much of a human's brain stayed active while they slept. The concept of memory consolidation and emotional processing during rest must be foreign to Eridians. I could've gone on a tangent about that alone. I could've told you about the parasympathetic nervous system and all the biological process that happen during REM sleep. I could've told you about the inner workings of my body, in a bid to get you to do the same.
But, with fatigue eating away at my cognitive functions and lowering my inhibitions, I bared my heart to you instead.
"It's like… another life that you live where crazy stuff happens, but it all makes sense." I muttered, raw and vulnerable. "Kinda like today."
I likened meeting you to a dream, and my only consolation is that I don't think you understood the significance of that.
Or: Grace struggles to put a name to his feelings for Rocky.

Rocky has a problem.
Honestly, he has many. The fact that he's running out of food on the trip back to Erid is a big, important one, for sure—but definitely isn't the only one. It's also not the one that's been on top of his priority list, if he's being so honest.
No, the big problem—the real problem—is currently at his makeshift lab on the Hail Mary, checking the Taumeoba to make sure things were still hunky-dory. The problem that haunts him every fucking day, the problem that makes him feel like he's losing his goddamn mind whenever he's around.
The problem he wants to fuck absolutely senseless.
Grace is that problem.

This was it.
Grace and Rocky had confessed their love to each other early in their trip together back to Erid on Mary, leaving themselves literal years of what became increasingly frustrating time together. Not emotionally; they were both thrilled to find that the other felt the exact same way they did, despite all of the challenges they would face as two beings who could not survive in each other's atmospheres.
The suit was done. Stress testing was done. Rocky finally stood before Grace in Grace's part of the ship, wearing an unbelievably thin and malleable xenonite covering, and a rebreather that would allow him to stay for a good number of hours.
Grace and Rocky's first time being able to touch each other doesn't go exactly as planned.

“Good good, now use welding tool to join.” He moves Grace’s wrist to position the rod so it turns farther outward.
“Slow slow gentle,” he repeats. Grace is actually going to die.
He stretches his finger, tugging the wires connecting the mechanisms, and clicks the fingertips together to create a spark. Rocky chitters cheerfully behind him.
“Good good, Grace doing good.”
Grace’s face is burning. Rocky’s body heat seeps into him; he’s running hot all over, but especially in his face. Rocky doesn’t comment on it yet, hopefully ascribing Grace’s fever-like state to his own body being a smelting furnace.
He wets his dry lips again. “Thanks, bud, I think I’m getting the hang of it.”
Grace sucks at flirting. But when he comes across Ghost (1990) while looking for something to watch for their movie night, he has a brilliant idea: to recreate the pottery wheel scene with Rocky. He asks Rocky to teach him to make xenonite sculptures using Eridian welding tools. Naturally, things escalate from there.

It was an accident the first time.
(One could argue that it wasn't even an accident the first time. Grace could argue this, and he would argue this, probably questioning, how does someone masturbate accidentally??? To which Rocky would then point to Portable Earth Thinking Machine and bring up the many definitions of the very word accident—one being "lack of intention or necessity," which is what Rocky means in this particular case.)
…admittedly, it doesn't quite work. Rocky didn't start pleasuring himself accidentally after all—that was very intentional, as much as he'd hate to admit it, but he'd rather jump out of Mary's airlock than explain that to Grace.
So no, not quite an accident. Not exactly the word that fits this peculiar situation he's gotten himself into.
Rocky just didn't intend for it to go this far.

Weighing his options, Grace opted to curl back into his mattress, hiking his quilt up to his ears. If he just laid here and drifted off again, they wouldn't come in and make him wash his dishes just yet. If it had just been Rocky, maybe, but ever since he and Adrian had also become mates, they spoiled their human rotten— Grace loved it. Rocky called it out every single time, but the objections had no bite, mostly because Rocky was astronomically whipped for his mates and let a lot of things slide when they were both involved.
Rocky wasn't letting it slide today, though.
