Summary

In an ambiguously pre-Industrial society, Jade English sends her grandson out into the world to experience the joys of adventuring for himself. This would probably be easier if Jake had paid more attention to her adventuring lessons. Then again, nothing’s really been easy since the Curse hit all those years ago.
Or: Dirk is a cursed bird boy with intimacy issues, Jake finds (and dates) him, Roxy and Jane are beautiful disasters in their own rights, and everything is varying levels of awful until it isn’t. Featuring as much fluff as I can cram in between the plot-driven angst and a lot of wing appreciation and preening.

When the Apocalypse starts, Rose Lalonde is tucked away in a corner of the library, up on the second floor balcony. She is so safely enveloped in her book that she misses the calls of panicking friends and family, desperate to know if she is okay. She misses the first and last reports of the undead uprising, just as she misses the first scream as zombies finally break into her building.
She does not, however, miss the second scream, or the third.
And she certainly does not miss when she pulls out her knitting needles and aims for the eyes of the zombies out for her flesh.

John disappeared shortly after the cake was cut. Jane and Roxy flew their new mutual wife to the top of a ten-foot tiered cake to slice the inaugural piece and he was standing next to me, then as press and party-goers surged forward in a mad rush for sugar he slipped away. I felt the tail end of a cold breeze flit from the crowd and I only barely caught the direction it flew in as it disappeared. John wasn’t a subtle guy, I could tell something was off at the beginning of the ceremony. The biggest surprise was that it took him this long to escape.
Jane, Callie, and Roxy are all getting married, and John's feeling something very specific to being gay at a wedding, and missing your father. Dirk does his best to be supportive.
