Summary
Mike was fourteen when the pain in his knees first started.
It began as a sharp, almost electric burn behind his kneecaps whenever he climbed the rickety spiral staircases of the Chapel, a hot line of discomfort that flared with each step. At first, it was easy to brush off — the sort of sting that faded quickly once he sat down, gone as suddenly as it arrived.
At first.
But over time, without Mike being able to pinpoint when, exactly, it stopped fading. The pain was there on the stairs, but then it followed him when he ran. Then, when he walked too fast. Then, when he lay down at night, and a deep, leaden ache pooled in his joints and refused to let go. It became the kind of pain that hung around like bad weather, quiet in the background until it chose to break into a storm.

Summary
The thing about Buck and chronic pain is that it doesn't start with the ladder truck. Sure, the bombing makes his leg worse, but—
It starts with showers, and the way his arms sometimes ache too much to clean himself properly; the way he steps out of them, all faint and weak, feeling like he’s actually died. It starts with stairs, and the fact that even one flight leaves his legs worn out like he’s ran a mile, how they make his heartbeat thud in his ears to the point of nausea. It starts with supplements, and how many of them he takes in hopes that they’ll make up for some unknown deficiency and fix it all, and it starts with the continuous disappointment when none of them do shit.
The thing about Buck and chronic pain is that it starts before he even really knows what it is, and it never stops.
Or: Buck, Eddie, and an exploration of undiagnosed chronic illness.
