“It’s not about that,” Alex says, voice stable. He leans back in, still cleaning wounds, a crease in his forehead growing as he reveals more bruises as he wipes away blood.
“You manage to act like it,” Henry grits out, pushing through the pain.
“What the fuck does that mean?” Alex snaps back, but the withering look in his eyes is a stark different than his hands resting delicate against Henry’s body, and Henry can’t fucking think.
It’s a shock, then, when Alex’s voice comes in as angry, clear as day, “Who the fuck did this to you?”

Henry’s chest softens at her words and he turns to face her completely. “Oh. Is everything alright?”
“Sorry, just, there’s this guy at the bar and he’s been looking at me all night. My friends had to leave and I said I’d be alright on my own but he’s…he’s giving me a really bad feeling. I just think he might be less likely to try something if I’m with another guy, you know?”

Lonely, on the other hand, is an effect, an all-encompassing melancholy which Henry certainly doesn’t experience; he has the children and staff at the music studio, and sometimes Pez visits from Oxford. And of course he has David, who does accompany him when it doesn’t interrupt the dog’s nap schedule. On these walks, Henry is alone, not lonely.

Alex couldn’t stop himself from pulling Henry closer by the bend of his elbow, from slipping his hands into his favourite spot on Henry’s waist and dragging Henry towards his lips. It’s not like Henry protested at all, in fact he was the one who pushed Alex against the counter, threaded his hands into Alex’s hair and swallowed the soft moan that slipped from Alex’s lips. Their meal had been cold for hours by the time they resurfaced for air, their bodies exhausted and pliable and dotted with fresh marks of mine, at least for a while. But they didn’t talk about it.

“Uh, well,” A small, dejected laugh falls from Alex’s mouth. “Funny thing. You remember Grace? The girl that came over a couple weeks ago?”
“Grace Aringa, yeah.” Henry nods, ignoring Alex’s questioning glance. How the fuck does Henry know her last name and Alex doesn’t? “What about her?”
“She…is…” Alex takes a deep breath before puffing his cheeks and exhaling quickly. “Having a baby.”
“Oh.” It takes a second before something unrecognisable flickers in Henry’s eyes. “Oh.”
Alex watches Henry blink a few times, watches Henry’s tongue dart out to moisten his lips as he glances at the wall behind Alex’s head for a moment, seemingly composing himself before offering a short nod.
“Right…well.”
“Yeah.” Alex swallows, unable to draw his gaze from the base of Henry’s throat. More specifically, the patch of dark purple skin peeking out from the collar of his soft grey sweater. He wasn’t aware that Henry was a hickey kind of guy.
“I mean,” Henry says. “It’s not ideal but I’m sure we can make it work.”

As with so many of the bad decisions in Alex’s life, it starts with a dare.
At least this time, the dare isn’t his. He’s at a party his sister and her girlfriend Nora are hosting in their gorgeous New York apartment, filled with a mixture of their friends from college, new people from June’s newspaper job, and Alex.
College friends of course includes Pez, June and Nora’s sometime hookup (Alex really wishes he knew less of the details). Pez is president of the college’s LGBTQ+ society, and no party at Colombia – indeed, no party in New York – is complete without him.
And where there is Pez…there is also Henry.

“I’m sorry…” Henry says eventually, when he can’t stand the silence for a moment longer. It’s maybe the longest he’s ever known Alex to voluntarily be quiet for, and by the five minute mark it’s unnerving him.
“Hey,” Alex replies, reaching over to curl his uninjured fingers around Henry’s wrist, pressing lightly against the pulse point there, “you’ve got nothing to apologise for. Not ever, but especially not this, alright?”
