Summary
McGill Redbirds’ alternate captains Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov barely speak a word to each other off the ice. Their lack of communication is beginning to weigh on the team, and with playoffs right around the corner, Coach Wiebe is not taking any chances. So, he decides that until the season is over, Ilya will move into Shane’s apartment so they can learn to become something like friends. Ilya only has a few problems with this arrangement. 1. He hates packing 2. He hates Shane Hollander 3. He hates Shane Hollander’s very public boyfriend and 4. Ilya Rozanov has a fat crush on Shane Hollander. But as their friendship (?) grows, and barriers are broken down. Ilya realizes Shane’s life isn’t as good as it’s projected.

But he and Ilya have never been more disconnected, so he resigns himself to fighting this without Ilya in his life.
Ilya knows he was an asshole last Spring. Shane has been ignoring him all summer. But he figures that once he's back in North America and the season starts, he'll be able to get back in Shane's good graces. And then Montreal announces that they have placed Shane Hollander on Long Term Injured Reserve and he panics.

Exhaustion had never hit Ilya quite like this before. He always expected a mid-season slump; anyone would after months of grueling physical activity. But these last few years in Ottawa—they've drained Ilya.
Sure, they've started winning more. They aren't exactly scrapping the bottom of the barrel anymore, but playoff hopes were still a ways away. And, for Stanley Cup champion Ilya Rozanov who ate, slept, and breathed winning, it sort of felt like his soul was being slowly sucked out of his body.
It was all worth it to be closer to Shane. Of course it was. It was so, so worth it to see him and hold him more than four times during the season and in stolen moments during the summer that Ilya clung to like a lifeline. He would do it all over again and again and again, just to see Shane—his Shane—smile.
But he wishes it wasn't so fucking exhausting.

“We do not say anything about the Hollander situation,” LeClaire tells them even though it sounds like he’s already resigned to what he knows is going to happen.
After all, Roz gets extremely mad whenever it’s brought up. Not that Cliff can blame him, he’s pretty sure that Roz liked Hollander before this (wouldn’t chirp him half as much if he didn’t). Finding out that he’s such a bastard must sting.
Not to mention that Roz does not mess around with people that disrespect girls. Or women. Or kids. Or dogs. Or the elderly (excluding Scott Hunter). Or really anyone, if it’s for petty stupid reasons.
“Of course,” Cliff agrees for both of them since Roz is still too busy texting someone.
It’s apparently not good enough for LeClaire because he asks, “Roz?”
“Just one second,” he answers without raising his eyes from his phone or stopping his typing. “Need to get my Jane to agree with something. She’s very stubborn.”
Or. My take on the 'their text leak and now everybody thinks that Shane is an abusive bastard' premise. Featuring Ilya giving a presser, Marly realizing in real time who 'Jane' is and the internet reacting to the craziness.

Shane takes a shaky breath, realizing there's no way he can keep his mom from hearing him cry at this point. His nerves are absolutely shot, he doesn't know if he needs a shot of espresso or vodka. God, Ilya's screams... He couldn't stop thinking about it.
"You had a friend with you on your silent retreat?"
Fuck it.
"Yeah, it was a romantic thing. Kind of ruined by the whole ambulance ride and surgery."
"Shane, you're seeing someone?"
Fuck it all.
"Yeah. Yeah, his name is Ilya Rozanov."
"Yeah, mom. I did."
The trip to the cottage is cut short when Ilya's appendix decides to ruin everything. Shane comes out to his parents in a very different way. Ilya starts to realize he can't be the one taking care of everyone else all the time.

Ilya almost fell out of his chair in his haste to grab a pen, knocking over the IHeartLoons mug that held an assortment of pens and pencils. Blyat! Svetlana gave a quizzical look. On the other end of the phone line, Shane asked “Is everything okay?”
With his most nonchalant voice, Ilya replied “Oh yes, my co-worker just dropped some supplies. It is all fine.” As Svetlana glared at him, Ilya silently mouthed "It is SHANE HOLLANDER" but she couldn’t understand him. She walked over to look at the computer screen and saw the name on the file that he just brought up. Wiggling her eyebrows, she started puckering her lips, making kissing noises and hugging herself in a fake embrace. Ilya swatted at her as he tried to remember how to operate a keyboard.
