And there was another one, tucked away on the side of a rugged mountain road, grown gnarly from the side of a stone wall, aerial roots hanging greedily from its branches, grasping at life. Under this huangge tree, Xiao Zhan had felt the first stirrings of spring in his heart, sensed its bud and felt it bloom, and had, with a small pocket knife, painstakingly carved the numbers 1823 into its trunk.

The nighttime skyline of Beijing was beautiful, he always knew that, but to see it from the top of this building, reflected in the river below them, caught him off guard. His eyes hurt with how brightly the city lights cast a glow against the dark blanket of sky, but he kept his eyes wide, taking everything in. The way the city moved, the way the city breathed, the way it winked at him, it was the most perfect view.

The boy standing in front of him, arms outstretched, hand in his, hair flying in the wind as he smiled widely back at him with the city lights behind him. His lungs screamed with the way the wind seemed to punch the air out of them. His heart pounded as Yibo’s smile grew impossibly wider. Despite the absence of light on the rooftop, he somehow caught a glint from his eye flashing at him, asking, begging him to come closer.
