"You know I will." Remus chuckles. He can't summon the strength to look at James, preparing to be run raw by another one of James' quirks. He's too kind, their Jamie, too caring, too boldly emotional. It's going to be the death of them all, Remus is sure of it.
"If I could, Moony, I'd move all of us out to the country today and cast a vanishing charm." James' voice wavers, falling on Remus' ears softly; no longer straining his headache. "It's so fucking scary. You should see the Auror office- we're in shambles."
Remus picks his head up, and catches James' hand darting away from under his glasses. His heart breaks, just as he knew it would, and he reaches out for Prongs' hand.
"If I could I'd take us, and Lily, and Marly and Dorcas and Mary- and everybody's families and hide," James' voice breaks, and Remus squeezes his hand. His high has forgotten him, amidst the emotion. "God, I'm such a coward. But I'd do it."
"Why can't you?"-
In the year after Hogwarts, and before the turn of the decade, Remus desperately wishes he could run away.
