It was a nasty habit, one which she’d had for as long as she could remember and which had made her sport many a boo-boo and teary eyes that had to be wrapped and wiped away by hands kinder than she’d ever be.
She had memories of sitting at the dinner table in middle school, working on homework and gnawing on herself while her mom cooked dinner.
‘Tsk, tsk,’ her mother would tut as she turned the heat low and looked over at her. ‘Asa, dear, if you worry that thing any longer, the boys in class may just mistake you for a baited fish. What’s snagged you this time, honeybun?’
