Natasha teaches a class on Interpersonal Espionage, Clint audits her course, and against the backdrop of the lessons they each get to know the other better. This whole piece is perfection.
Natasha studies him, not entirely sure how to respond to that. He’s being genuine, she thinks, though her instincts still want to tell her that there’s no way he isn’t working some sort of angle with this whole thing. And she doesn’t like people having agendas that she can’t understand or identify.
“Do you think that’s what I do?” she counters, watching his reaction.
He nods once, thoughtfully. “Some. I mean, you’re much too sophisticated to just use one technique all the time. But I do think I’ve seen you use truth as part of your arsenal. The night I brought you in, you told me that you weren’t sure who you were. I think that was true. Or at least you believed it was.”
She meets his eyes, holds the weight of his gaze for a moment. “I did. And what did you tell me?”
He smiles, almost imperceptibly. “That I thought S.H.I.E.L.D. could help you answer that question. That it did for me.”

I’ve seen how the two of you work, Natasha. One of you always has the watch and he did his job. He saw you through until you were able to stay awake for more than five minutes at a time.”
This is how this plays out, though. Every time he gets hurt, they go through this same song and dance. Each time, he takes a little bit longer to heal as his aging body struggles to put everything back in order. This time was bad, she’s not going to lie to herself.

Tony’s issues are at once written all over him and so private she feels like an intruder just thinking of them. “Tony has as much red in his ledger as we do. He just didn’t pull the trigger himself.”
“So you’re going to stay,” Clint says.
“I’m going to help,” she replies. “Myself as much as anyone.”

LAST NEW MESSAGE, the phone says. Clint lets out the breath he didn't know he'd been holding when he hears Natasha's voice. "Hey," she says, sounding strangely cheerful, "Let me know when you're around, because we need to catch up!" He does not doubt Sam Wilson's claim that she is going to set his phone on fire and throw it in the river--if the TV is any indication, she has already proved that she is great at lighting things on fire and throwing them in the river.
