Ryland Grace and Eva Stratt met years before the Petrova Line was found, in those years they got married and had a baby, Elizabeth Marie Grace-Stratt. But now Elizabeth is four, the Petrova Line is a world ending problem and Eva Stratt needs a scientist, to be specific she needs her husband, there was no one she could trust more for this project.
The only problem? They need to take their daughter on the Vat with them. Their shy daughter, who has to now be thrown on a ship with a bunch a strangers.

And now I’m wrestling with new questions, like whether I’m really the kind of guy who sleeps with his boss, knocks her up, and promptly peaces out to Tau Ceti. You know, as one does.
Leading up to the launch, Grace and Stratt make slightly different choices, and carry slightly different consequences to the ends of the earth and beyond the stars.

You tear your eyes from the myriad of glass tubing crowding the bunks. That was most definitely not the same automated voice that the computer had spoken with earlier. You turn around, and—
Well. You have no fucking idea what you’re looking at.
Your brain rapidly oscillates between fight or flight, fight or flight, before settling on the third option; freeze and scream. Your already dry and strained vocal cords squeeze and shred in protest, so it comes out less like shriek and more like a raspy whine. Get with the program, larynx!
The creature makes some sort of shrill, musical noise back, waving its appendages at you. Which you can only assume is some sort of offensive posture. Holy shit.
“Not worry! Rocky friend! Grace! Pilot friend awake!” The creature trills.
Hail Mary's commanding officer wakes up two months late.
