Summary
Zim damages his PAK in a lab accident. It’s certainly nothing to worry about... as long as the Tallest send him those replacement parts before it starts seriously affecting his health. Zim’s injury and the resulting increase in his strange behavior inevitably sets Dib off, and his increasing suspicion and paranoia leads to an event that tips the delicate balance of their conflict wildly out of Zim’s favor. One way or another, everything is about to change.

Dib Membrane is about to leave his seat when his phone buzzes. Curious, he pulls out his phone underneath his desk, leans back to make it less obvious.
Did Zim send him a message? It wouldn't be the first time. Zim has hacked into his cellular tower before in order to retrieve Dib's phone number. In fact, Dib thinks that Zim might actually still be hacked into it, using it as his own means for sending "human" electronic messages. Whatever. Unless he starts using it for anything harmful, he doesn't really care.
He unlocks his phone and pulls down the notifications tab. He blinks, reading.
It's not Zim.
He wishes that it somehow was, though.

He was almost autumnal in a sense, as if he had lost the leaves of youth and didn't quite know what to do as a chill swept in. There was a gloom in his eyes, and a new slouch to his shoulders. When he held Dib's gaze in the rear-view mirror on the way home there had been something in his eyes, something that he couldn't quite say.

It’s been over a month now since the initial event where Zim’s pak started to process things differently after a fight with Dib, not only resulting in Zim’s realization at the worthlessness of his ‘mission’ but also the realization that things have been very different than what he’d thought them to be.

Summary
A job to kill the Chupacabra seemingly presented via their former group, The Swollen Eyeballs felt too simple. So, 20 something-year-old Dib Membrane can’t understand. Any reason for Zim an X-invader of all people to back down, and who does that Green Bastard get off ordering him not to go either?
Dib should’ve realized by now. ~
Zim has years of survival instinct. He’s livid through blackouts, assassins, including Dib himself, his own crazy. And just about everything else, the universe has thrown Zim’s way.
~ That for once the voices in your head; advising you not to do something, aren’t as outrageous or as crazy as you. Sometimes swallowing back notions of being in the wrong for the fire of one’s pride shouldn’t be ignored. And sometimes one’s forgotten fear is the universe’s instinct of reason.
Because as often as Dib loves to speculate, Zim is unaffected by death; he’s still made of flesh and bone.
