This year was going to be different. While Axel hadn't said anything or acted like he expected a gift, Michael wanted to get him something. It was stupid and he cringed internally at the thought but Arthur had spurred him on; the man was good at that; and he had finished making in his opinion a rather shitty card the night before and had bought him a poetry book by a guy named Máirtín O'Direáin a couple weeks ago. He had mentioned him before to Michael and he had no idea who he was but had hoped Axel would like it. It had been expensive as well.

What had meant to be the five of them meeting up during Easter break to catch up, bitch about A levels and college, eat pizza and play Mario Kart had turned into Rowan, Sadie and Finney racing each other and Samir sounding like an absolute dick over Princess Peach, Bowser and Wario. It was fucking Mario Kart for fucks sake not the Premier League. And the fact he had lost straight after Michael had made it worse apparently. Michael took an annoyed bite of pizza and yeah admittedly he was a bit too grouchy but then so was Samir.

“Sorry, Pete, I–” Cutting himself off mid-apology, Wade suddenly looks up at him, and Peter can tell he's making a face even with the mask on. There's a pause. For a second it feels like Wade is staring a hole straight into his stupid, slow brain. Peter's breath comes out hot, heavy, shaky. Then, slowly, with realization: “That wasn't from pain.”
Shaking his head weakly, Peter presses his free hand over his eyes and squeezes at his temples, humiliated. “Sorry,” he mumbles, “I can do it myself if you want.”
