He wished that he could fix this.
Robin pressed her forehead to his, tears cutting tracks of pale, freckled skin through the ash and blood on her cheeks as her mouth stumbled around the shape of Steve's name, begging him to stay with her.
God, Steve wanted to fix this. Fix all of it. How can he keep them safe if he's dead?

There’s almost an entire decade between Steve and the kid sitting on his parents’ couch. It’s weird because Steve doesn’t really feel old most days.
He’s grown up, sure, moved out of his parents' house and left Hawkins and pays rent and utilities and, like, votes. He has a job and he gets coffee with Robin and shares a bed with Eddie and they go grocery shopping on Sundays.
And not a day goes by when Steve doesn’t feel like he has no idea what the hell he’s doing.
But right now he’s staring at the baby-faced kid he used to be, hair styled back and big, neat polo shirt and Levi’s, a sharply defensive glint in his eyes. He’s Steve but Steve hasn’t been that guy in a long time.

Summary
They lost, Eddie died, Max is in a coma, and Hawkins, despite Vecna’s best attempt to tear it apart, is suddenly feeling the “spirit of community”. Steve feels lost and unfit to fulfill his usual role of Protector for the kids when he can’t even come to terms himself with what happened. How did they fail? What did he do wrong?
He finds himself drifting one night to an old haunt from childhood: a nearby lake untouched by Vecna’s rifts. Though the nightmare from Lover’s Lake is still fresh, the cool, quiet water is too tempting to ease his racing mind and aching body. He dips below the surface only to discover something incomprehensible in the impossible depths of the lake. It says it can help him save his friends, but at what cost? Steve, too eager to bring back those that they lost, is thrust into the past.
Time traveling may come with its unseen consequences, but with it there’s hope, maddening as it may be, and the chance to fall for someone that he realizes he can’t go back without.
