There’s no answer and he breathes a laugh, sitting with his legs in the opening as he takes in the sight of his girl: stretched out on her stomach on a soft knit rug strewn with pillows. Headphones on and attached to the record player he bought her two years ago… but he knows, there’s no song playing in her ears despite the way her feet sway, bare, with a freshly-painted coat of sparkly-blue the same as her finger nails. Tanned skinny legs, tanned skinny thighs, cotton sundress bunched up around her upper thighs.
He snorts and tilts his beer up to his mouth to drink, stealing a second to look at her longer. “This the hello I get, kiddo?”
Her toes curl, but Ellie stays silent, her legs still swaying and it makes him grin around another mouthful of beer.
Lil’ brat, he thinks, there’s definitely no music playing in those headphones. Pushing himself up the rest of the way, he shuts the door that covers the opening behind him, making sure to slide the latch that locks it in place before he walks over to her.
“Gonna ignore me, huh?”

Yes, she thinks, I’ve known it for years. I just didn’t want to believe it. She wants to say, I know you, I know what you’re capable of, I’ve been learning from you for four years— but no matter how many times she’s tried to emulate his ability to stay quiet and calm and not just react— she feels like a kettle seconds from a scream.
