Dottore snaps his finger in Esfir’s face warningly. “Keep– Keep him stable. I need– some water.”
Staggering from the operating room, Dottore collapses against the back of the closed door, shuddering in a breath that wracks through his entire body.
Feofan died. Feofan died. Feofan died. Feofan died.
Legs full of pins and needles, Dottore makes it to his office, chugging a glass of water and bracing himself over his desk, knuckles white, fingers splayed over the wood.
Feofan died.
He needs to finish the surgery.
Or: after complications during surgery, Dottore develops extremely bad anxiety around Feofan's health (and also they fall in love)

Summary
Truthless Recluse cared little for being honest. Why would he? No matter how his professor tried to postulate otherwise, the truth was a source of bitter hurt for every ear it fell upon. So cheating on an exam gave him no moral quandaries. The plan was simple- Take his exam, skim the correct answers from the Sage of Truth's mind as he graded the exams of his peers, and leave all the more smug for lying to the Truthsayer.
His plan didn't account for the Sage thinking of something far more licentious than the answer key.

His long, usually perfectly coiffed hair was a tangled mess, and his robes had gone slightly undone.
Shadow Milk's gaze didn’t stop there. He found Pure Vanilla's face, which was almost hidden behind the cookie's blonde waves.
His face was flushed red, and his eyes looked astonishingly tired.
It was clear to Shadow Milk that the great Pure Vanilla, king of the Vanilla Kingdom, was standing in front of him completely drunk off of witches-know-what.

There is a child in Al-Haitham’s covers, on Al-Haitham’s bed. A child. They can’t be older than two or three from how tiny they are. Their hair is a messy bird’s nest of gray strands, and their hands are small—gripped tight to Al-Haitham’s sheets. The child is drowning in the shirt they have on, the sleeves reaching their elbows and the collar drooping over their chest. For one nonsensical moment, Kaveh thinks, Al-Haitham never told him he had a child.
(Al-Haitham turns into a kid. It goes about as well as you’d expect.)

If he hadn't, the issue of Sandrone's present company would have been dealt with by the end of the first act. "Has it ever occurred to either of you," she mutters, "that not everyone has seen this play before?"
Pantalone hums lightly. "Opera, actually."
Sandrone is going to kill him.
Alternatively: Sandrone has the misfortune of being seated next to Dottore and Pantalone at the opera. It is perhaps the most horrendous three hours of her entire career.
