Adam had often worried that he'd never feel clean again. He worried more often that he'd never been clean to begin with, and that there was no hope of regaining something that didn't run in his blood. He'd glimpsed the baptismal font at one point or another, ushering Ronan inside St. Agnes after school, in the middle of the night, and from his apartment window he'd observed the comings and goings of parishioners on their way to be baptized. Adam had watched adults, sticky in the summer heat, try to pretend they weren't disappointed afterwards, untouched by spiritual upheaval; he'd watched young children who had no desire to be there, hair still dripping wet, play on their phones; he'd seen babies in white gowns wail as they were carried from the church, ignorant of the meaning, unaware of eternal damnation and how they'd been spared. Everything was misery dressed in its Sunday best.
When Ronan held Adam under the water, it hadn't felt like that. It hadn't been miserable.

"I like it," Adam said. He threaded his hand through Ronan's hair. Once he had a good grip, he tugged.
Ronan lurched in Adam's lap, eyes closing as his head tipped back. "Fuck."
He watched Ronan's face pinken, nearly as pink as his mouth. Adam could only think of Ronan's clothes coming off, the rest of his body turning that same shade. A grin spread across his face.
"I really like it," he said.
or: After stopping the apocalypse, Ronan and Adam spend the night in Boston. Adam discovers that Ronan's hair grew while he slept. They make up for lost time.
