Her yellowed eyes start to redden, and it’s only then that Kris realizes they’re watering. Not crying, no—but something close to it. Her voice is breaking and her face is scrunched up with rage.
Oh.
She wasn’t messing around.
In which Susie struggles with math, and Kris struggles with realizing her struggle is genuine.

Kris’s eyes lit up so brightly they didn’t even need to speak.

The door to Ralsei’s room pushed open, Kris and Susie immediately met with the sight of a soft, translucent material draped over the mirror, covering nearly its entire length.
"I didn't want it to get dusty," Ralsei rushed to explain.
“Seriously, do you not like it or something?”
Kris glared at him, red flames dancing up and down as they regarded Ralsei’s distressed stance, though their face remained carefully dulled. A pang of guilt quivered his insides anyway.
“No! No, not at all! I appreciate it, truly,” He bit his lower lip, rocking back and forth on the soles of his feet. “It's simply… tough… for me to bear the reflection.”
Kris and Susie bring a mirror to decorate Ralsei's room.

Summary
There's a cycle to the life of a Darkner.
They're born, and from whatever hopes-and-dreams cobbled them together they get a role, static and unchanging. They play their role good, until they aren't needed anymore and are left forgotten, like all things that are outgrown. They don't want things beyond what they were made for, because they are not people: they are Darkners. They do not want.
Ralsei can't stop herself from wanting, anyways.

The prince's heart warmed at her words. So kind, so concerned, a friendship that had long exceeded his expectations, even making him forget that wanting more from it made him a selfish creature.
Carefully, he placed his hand on hers. Susie didn't pull away, deciding to accept him once again. "I love you too, Susie. I really do," he whispered. “That's why I don't want you to worry.”
“I want to help you.”
