Peter plans to skip school, and Tony plans to skip the whole damn day by losing himself in his lab.
Fortunately, May and Pepper have made the executive decision for both of them that spending the day together will be healthier than the two of them hiding away, grieving alone.
Or, in which through a road trip down the coast, Peter learns more about Tony, and Tony learns more about what fatherhood really means.

Humouring the clumsy metaphor, Tony levels with the cryptic kid. “You wanna read it for me?”
“Yeah. I’m not – I’m actually…” he pauses to swipe his lips with his tongue. “I probably seem nervous here because I wanna stay here. I just… I guess I’m scared of messing up? I really don’t – don’t want you to…”
Leave me.
The word blindsided pales in comparison to what Tony’s feeling. That’s not – I can’t believe I… Oh my God.
It’s a struggle to hang on to his veneer of snarky calm. “Right. Well, I’m gonna take the liberty of telling you that you’re way off base.”

“Nah-ah-ah!” Tony claps sharply in an attempt to get his best friend to shut the hell up. “This is Peter’s day. A day for Peter’s accomplishments, Peter’s wishes and, more importantly, Peter’s embarrassments. We can save the MIT stories for my actual birthday.”
“As much as I’m dying to hear how you turned MIT upside-down,” says Peter with a shit-eating grin, “I think I witness enough embarrassment from you on a day-to-day basis to tide me over till next year.”
Tony points at the kid. Actually points at him. “Colonel Rhodes, arrest this wall-crawler.”
“Right honorific, wrong profession. Sorry, Tones. The wall-crawler appreciates my hexagons. I’m Switzerland.”
“You’re not Switzerland!” Tony sputters in protest. “You couldn’t be farther from Switzerland!”

Peter stares at him, dead into his eyes behind the stupid layer of those stupid rose-colored sunglasses, and he opens his mouth to speak and squeezes the ball of sand in his hand, and tries to say May. I want May. I want her back, and nothing comes out but a small, pained sound like a wounded animal.
“Pete?”
Stop it. Stop it. Stop, it hurts.
“I’m fine,” Peter gasps out.

A full-body flinch courses through Peter. It’s not alarming--just a neurological tic of exhaustion that has Tony on his feet and crossing the small patch of distance left between them to sit on the nearest corner of the coffee table.
Peter opens his eyes and blinks up at Tony, or rather at the shadow that falls over his pale face, and gives a tiny wave that under any other specific set of circumstances would be downright ridiculous. “Hi, Mr. Stark.”
“Hi, kid. Wanna talk?”
Peter goes to open his mouth but hesitates. They both know he’s too intelligent to play the innocent card now. The words replay themselves of their own accord in Tony’s mind--instant kill, instant kill, instant, kill, kill--
One good look at Peter’s eyes confirms the kid is on the same page.

"Today doesn't exist." Peter whispered to himself and looked down below him. "It doesn't have to exist." A hand landed on his shoulder and the teen snapped his head to the side to see Mr. Stark. "It doesn't have to exist, I just have to make way for tomorrow."
Peter slowly sank back down so he was sitting and saw Mr. Stark sit next to him. It was obvious Mr. Stark didn't want to be here. Why would he be here? Why would he want to be here?
"I just want today to stop existing." Peter whimpered.
"I know buddy." Mr. Stark said softly.
OR
Sometimes, Peter doesn't like living in the present. There's too much going on, too many thoughts, and it's loud, so he blocks it out, becomes distant with all things going on today, so maybe it will be better tomorrow. It's that thought that if he doesn't allow himself to exist today then maybe tomorrow existing will hurt a bit less. At least that's the theory in his head. However, it doesn't always work like that because that's just life. And unfortunately life doesn't like to play fair.
