“Hey, no biggie.” Kaito shrugs. “If we’re both sorry and neither of us are mad, then we can just move on… and I think you’re allowed to be a little quote on quote careless today, right?”
The reminder makes Kirumi frown. She tries to disguise the look, but Kaito’s eyes sharpen with understanding. He’s so observant. Barely anyone else in the class knows it, but Kirumi does. She tries to notice everything, where her classmates are concerned, for the purpose of serving them more effectively, and so she can gauge their potential as future clients. Kirumi doesn’t especially want to go to space—though she would if she was asked to—so Kaito wouldn’t be the easiest man to serve, but that doesn’t stop Kirumi from noticing his capabilities, either.
“Maybe more like restless?” Kaito guesses.
“Ah… perhaps.”

Everybody knows the ways in which Kaito supports his sidekicks, but they're far from the only members of their class Kaito takes care of.

The last sentence sort of knocks any possible responses Shuichi could’ve mustered right out of his mind, and he swallows thickly, staring up at Kaito for another long moment. He’s so… effortlessly kind and encouraging, and he’s there for Shuichi, without ever asking for anything in return, and for a moment Shuichi wants to grab Kaito’s hand with both of his and say, You know it’s not just Akamatsu-san, right? I couldn’t have done this without you, either.
But…
“Thank you, Momota-kun,” Shuichi says, very quietly, and Kaito grins, ruffling his hair before he turns to head into the classroom.

The door to the library suddenly bursts open. Kaito and Shuichi turn in unison and watch as their classmate Kokichi, trailed by Gonta, storms inside.
“Momota-chan! I have a proposition for you!” he announces, voice much too loud for the library. He’s hushed immediately by the librarian, and in return, Kokichi giggles, winking at the poor woman before he skips up to where Kaito and Shuichi are seated. “I want to organise a trade. My minion for your minion. Whaddya say?”
“A—” Kaito sputters. “A trade? What does that mean?”
Kokichi blinks. “What, were you born with a part of your brain missing?”

Kaito returns to earth and wakes up the next morning and starts counting—seconds, footsteps, days. He marks the days since his return from space on his calendar every morning when he awakens and wonders what it is, exactly, that he’s counting down to. There will be no more space trips, no grand finale. Kaito went to space and he came back and he’s normal now, or he’s supposed to be, living his daily life with all the people that care about him and thinking about the future and its infinite possibilities. The stars are behind him, and above him, and all around him really, but he’s still not among them, and every second away from them his heart aches further.
Due to Shuichi’s job at his uncle’s detective agency, his and Kaito’s apartment is in Tokyo. It’s a nice little spot with a balcony and lots of sunlight, but its location also means that at night when the sun goes down, Kaito stares up at the sky and sees nothing but empty blue.

“Hi, Amami,” Kaito responds. He sounds a little breathless, almost winded, like he’s been running. It wakes Rantaro up a little. Sweeping his hand through his hair, Rantaro prepares to respond with more concern, but Kaito beats him to the punch: “So uh, I dunno how to put this. We’re dating now.”
Of all the things Rantaro had been revving himself up to hear, that can go in maybe the bottom one thousand. “Excuse me?”
“Yeah, uhh—wait, shit. What time is it over there? Should I call you back?”
Rantaro stares over at the blinking red numbers of the hotel room’s alarm clock, which now read 3:06AM. After a pause to weigh his curiosity and his body’s natural need for sleep, Rantaro eventually responds, “I can last through a short phone call. I think I should be telling you to buy me dinner first, but it sounds as though that’s already happened?”

In the heat of the moment, to get out of rejecting a love confession, Kaito tells Maki that he's gay and dating someone he barely knows: Amami Rantaro. He comes up with a simple plan of action for getting himself out of it... but of course, life is rarely simple.

As far as he can remember, Kokichi Ouma has never had a healthy, supportive relationship, especially where sex was involved. His overwhelming presence often overshadows how small and--dare he say it--fragile his body really is, and his inability to truthfully express his feelings has gotten him into a number of situations with his partners that could arguably be considered assault. He's so easy to hold down, they may not even realize they're doing it, he figures. It's his fault, not theirs.
He honestly expected Kaito Momota to be the same way. Always blathering on about manliness and seemingly oblivious to the feelings of people besides his close friends, he'd surely manhandle Kokichi around like any other guy.
As it turns out, that couldn't be further from the truth. Kaito is slow and gentle and always puts Kokichi first, constantly checking to make sure he's doing okay. He never does anything without explicit consent and lets Kokichi initiate everything. Most importantly, he loves and accepts every part of Kokichi, pranks and lies and trust issues and all. He makes Kokichi feel cared about, feel loved, in a way nobody ever has before.
If it weren't for his damn roommates...
