Summary
When Mahal himself offers to send Thorin back to the start of the quest to save the line of Durin, he is determined to make amends for all of the mistakes he made the first time around.
When Bilbo wakes up in Bag End eighty years in the past, all he knows is that he has somehow been given the chance to see his beloved dwarves again and he'll be damned if he doesn't take it.
Both dwarf and hobbit are desperate to prevent the quest from ending in tragedy, but neither will be able to do it on their own. They'll need to work together if they want to keep the entire Company alive and whole --but first they need to realize that they are not alone in their efforts, and they have to stop getting in each other's way at every turn they make.
Hopefully, they'll learn some things this time that they failed to learn before. And maybe, just maybe, they'll find their happy ending that both have been yearning for.

Bard could have reeled off all the sensible diplomatic reasons that Thranduil really should attend the banquet in Erebor. That is not what he said.
“If you come, I will do that thing you’ve been asking me for for weeks.” Is what he said instead.
Bard watched as Thranduil went from confusion to understanding, eyes going dark as Bard raised an eyebrow mischievously.
It was hilarious to watch Thranduil suddenly start packing with fervour.

“Fine.” Bard sighed, getting ready to outline his rules, but before he could a drowsy voice spoke.
“Courting a king’s daughter without permission, terrible. He can’t have you, he’s not good enough.” Thranduil protested.
“You’ve not even met him.”
“Doesn’t matter, he’s still not good enough. Couldn’t possibly be.”
Sigrid beamed at the Elvenking’s affection, Bard knew he held her with as much love as if she were his own. He did for all Bard’s children. But watching the way Sigrid smiled at his kind words made his heart squeeze.
“No unchaperoned dates. No outings after eight. No sneaking out. And absolutely no husband for at least five years.” Bard reeled off.
“Twenty.” Thranduil grumbled against Bard’s chest, making them both grin.

Summary
Thranduil was melancholy in a way he had never been before, at least with him. He took less delight in the things that they did. Last week Bard had taken him to a little pool he had found in the trees at the bottom of the mountain, it was beautiful, but Thranduil had seemed almost absent.
Bard was trying everything to make Thranduil happy, doing all of the things he knew Thranduil loved, all the things that made him laugh, taking him to the places that were theirs. But nothing worked, if anything it was just making Thranduil sadder. His laugh was broken and small, not musical and loud as it once was. He looked at their places ruefully and Bard could see he was filled with sorrow.
Bard didn’t know what was wrong.
He didn’t know how to fix it.
He desperately needed to fix it.

Summary
“Where?” Bard asked, he had never seen a single mark on the elf, and he had probably put his lips on every inch of that skin by now. Thranduil gestured warily at the left side of his face.
Bard ghosted his fingers over it, careful not to actually touch.
“Has it long since healed on the surface?” Bard wondered, combing his fingers through Thranduil’s silky hair in the way he knew he liked, he was surprised when Thranduil carefully shook his head.
“It will never heal.” Thranduil answered sadly.

Summary
It had been fairly obvious, at least to Bard and the other elves (luckily the other men hadn’t realised) that Thranduil had been delaying his departure as much as possible.
In theory, Bard was the only one who knew exactly why Thranduil was still there, and it was not so the king could ‘continue negotiations and help the people of Laketown rebuild Dale’.
Bard knew it had far more to do with the ‘official business’ he had to carry out with the 'king' of Dale; almost every night.

Summary
“King Thranduil, have you seen him?” Bard asked frantically to an elf perched on a ruin, helmet in his arms.
“No?” He replied, clearly confused by his obvious worry – after all, why should a man be so worried about the Elvenking. Bard really didn’t want to analyse that right now. Especially as he didn’t know where Thranduil was.
He’d seen Thranduil fight, it was a thing of beauty. Bard hadn’t known anyone, even an elf, could be so gracefully deadly on the battlefield, surely no one had managed best the lethal Elvenking. But they had been so outnumbered. He could’ve been surrounded.

Summary
“Maybe I wanted an excuse to keep you here.” Thranduil said it like a challenge, a slight glint in his eyes.
“Do kings need an excuse? I thought they just ordered.” Thranduil’s eyes were ghosting over his face, neither of them worrying about not staring anymore – not that Thranduil had ever seemed worried about that.
OR: Thranduil and Bard continue their discussions long after Bilbo and Gandalf leave the Elvenking's tent. Bard begins to find the elf more and more interesting and enticing.
