she opens her eyes instead.
they’re dark. shining. wrecked.

the honesty of it hits him so hard he almost sways.
his forehead finally touches hers.
just barely.
the contact feels like electricity. like relief and agony all at once. he exhales shakily, forehead pressed to hers, eyes closed like it’s the only way to keep himself together.
annabeth doesn’t pull away.

Annabeth laughed once, short and bitter. “That’s easy for you to say.”
Percy recoiled slightly. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means,” she said carefully, “that perfection has never been optional for me.”
His expression softened, anger draining into something like understanding—and that terrified her more than the anger had.

Summary
Annabeth likes to keep a few general rules for herself.
They aren’t written down, or anything- they just linger in the back of her mind. She has been doing this whole demigod thing for long enough to know that keeping a disciplined mind is how you survive out in the real world.
Then, she met Percy Jackson, who threw pretty much every rule she had made for herself out the window.
(Also, Annabeth thinks she might be crushing on him. Hard).
So when he disappears on the Princess Andromeda, all of those rules go out the window.
(Or: what if Percy didn't have the Golden Fleece when Luke stabbed him in the elevator?)
