The woman’s smile wavered for just a moment - still kindly, but sad, too, for reasons the girl didn’t understand.

There was always a time when supplies ran low or panels got dented beyond repair or somebody shot a hole through one of the fuel tanks. In those times, Nastya would sigh, put up a “0” on the “- Days Since Tomfoolery” sign, and go talk to Brian about the nearest suitable place to land.
That sign hadn’t gotten above a “10” for as long as Nastya could remember. At least it saved on the amount of number signs that had to be made.
Beyond the desert haze, a few minutes walk away from the landing site, was a town. Low-slung houses clustered around a marginally taller city center, though none of the buildings were particularly large or impressive even there. However, there was a large radio tower stuck smack-dab in the middle of town, and another on the far side of the settlement. Neither had any signs of disuse, and Nastya wondered at the necessity of having two separate towers for such a small community.
Maybe there were a lot of radio enthusiasts about.

“Louie—” Huey’s frantic warning was cut off as the device beeped once – loudly – and the light on his chest abruptly turned blue.

The part of Martin the Eye took, the part of him that thinks love is intimate and thorough knowledge of habits and scars and how sweet a person wants their tea, the part of him that read his mother’s journals desperate to see his name somewhere between all of the diagnoses and dark lines--it knows. It feels Jon, closer than ever before, like Martin’s holding him inside himself, somehow. The part of Martin that is the Eye is just replaced by--by Jon.
The realization stops him, shuddering, for a brief moment, with love and warmth and belonging and--he could be at home in the Panopticon too, couldn’t he, with Jon at home in him, the two of them a Venn diagram turning into one circle, there’s no reason--fear.

Ron’s quiet suspicion about which way Sammy swung was absolutely confirmed – the straight and narrow of King Falls might be all woe is me over the fact that they didn’t have a monopoly on marriage anymore, but no one looked this wrecked if the decision didn’t affect them personally. The question was why this had put Sammy in some sort of drunken stupor.
