Summary
It wasn’t solely in his head. That was the worst part. His head was a fractured and exhausted place, but he knew his way around it well enough. But this lived in the wilder terrain of his body, of his fingers curling—had they always done this?—at the sound of Ronan’s wicked laugh, of his stupid stubborn heart picking up its pace when Ronan’s name crossed his screen. It was in his veins and in his nerves and in other places he had spent too long resolutely ignoring to be able to control with any success now.
(Or: Adam gets a phone, a kiss, an idea, and a nervous breakdown; Ronan gets a job. They're both figuring it out.)

He missed the summer, those hot days and firefly nights, Ronan’s hands roaming up his shirt, Ronan’s stubble scratching his chin. He missed the midnight drives, the wind, the terrible music that sounded like sex to Adam nevertheless; the sidelong glances, the teasing smirks. He missed the dreaming: of Lindenmere, better than before; of the trinkets and baubles they created together—a puzzle they both enjoyed, where Adam’s logic and Ronan’s whimsy each bore equal strength. He missed the magic, filling his veins and his breath and his mind, letting him disconnect from being whichever Adam Parrish he was being called upon to be, and find community with everything else on the ley line that lived and moved and breathed and loved and wanted.
He missed being Adam Parrish.

Last summer, Adam Parrish started working at The Night Owl, running the closing shift of a cafe that pays too much and stays open too late. Last autumn, some asshole walked in and accidently changed Adam's life.
But just because you fall in love, doesn't mean the seasons stop changing.

Everybody knows that Ronan loves Adam. Ronan knows he loves Adam, and he’s pretty sure that Adam knows that he’s loved, too. But they’ve never said the words. They have other words, sure, just not that one, specific, stupidly important, word.
Instead of ‘I love you’, they say:
“Call me when you get home.”
“Eat, you dumbass.”
“I changed your oil.”
“I dreamt of you last night.”
“Tamquam,” “alter idem.”
Still, the ‘L’ word. The string of three words that mean so much and nothing to them at the same time, hasn’t been said. They don’t need to say it, either. But Ronan, ever stubborn and determined, needs to say it.

Ethan is still speaking—yelling—and Adam is—he’s a little nauseous. Part of him doesn’t want to be a part of this conversation at all, and a more traitorous part of him wants to call her back, but Ethan still has his cell phone.
Adam thinks, isn’t this how everything went long last time? Adam hid paycheck stubs from his parents and got caught in his own web of lies. Now he’s lied to Ethan and he has been caught for that as well. He never learns. He always makes the same mistakes.
Adam dampens his lips and chooses his next words carefully. “I don’t understand why you’re angry.”
