He misses the beach. The real beach. The current one is mostly soil with a lacy veneer of nuclear ash, clammy and streaky and hilariously radioactive, which is a real bummer when he thinks about it too hard. But the twenty-five meter sea level rise that came when all the freshwater ice finished melting around the mid-century mark ate away at the shoreline, rolled in between the skyscrapers on a new tide, swallowed up all the people who couldn't afford to move anywhere else. Have you seen the rent rates lately?
And then John accidentally'd the entire nuclear stockpile of the planet Earth.

For all the many things she could say about Gideon Nav - her hideous sense of humour, the way she never listened, her tendency towards stupefyingly boneheaded violence as the solution to every problem - there was no denying that give her something purely physical to do and she would generally execute it with an efficient and brutal grace that was remarkable to behold, if only for the damage she left in her wake.
Which is why it was mystifying what an absolute botch she was making of getting undressed.

“Fuck, you do though. You went off to explore that study alone, without your cavalier, using a key that I nearly gave my life for, and then you snorted some powder that made you crave my juice! Harrow. I never would have let you sniff powder from a ten thousand year old jar.”
This was untrue--Gideon probably wouldn’t have noticed Harrow breathing in a puff of jar powder until it was too late--but it sounded like something Camilla Hect might say, so Gideon went with it anyway. Camilla definitely would have stopped Palamedes from accidentally sniffing old as fuck Eighth House jarred juice addiction powder.

“Gideon,” replied Harrow, thoroughly bored of this interaction already and taking no pains to hide it. “There’s been a noise complaint about your social gathering, and as it is…” – she made a great show of checking the watch she didn’t own and therefore wasn’t wearing – “…ass and balls o’clock in the morning, I’m here to tell you to break it up and go to sleep like good little children.” She made sure to infuse ‘social gathering’ with the exact same tone of withering condescension she’d use to say, like, ‘debauched orgy’ or ‘World War II LARP session’ or ‘tea party with Ronald and Nancy Reagan.’
Predictably, Gideon ignored her. Instead, she slouched even harder and more bonelessly against the doorframe and held her hand to her face in an upsettingly decent imitation of the thinking emoji. “Ortus again?” she asked eventually, her tone carefully pruned of all discernible emotion.
“I take my role as senior resident of these halls of accommodation very seriously, as you well know, and it is my duty to investigate all complaints promptly and vigorously while protecting the anonymity of the complainant,” said Harrow officiously. “But yes, it was Ortus, because he is a big girl’s blouse.”
