Imagining that conversation made Ilya nauseous. Yes, no fucking doubt, Shane would be open to it if Ilya explained the reason. "I'm not going to ask him to do that."
Set during The Long Game, an alternate version where the plane scene doesn't happen. Instead, there's this: a car crash, a therapist's duty to report, and an urgent reckoning with priorities.

On January 10th, at approximately 3:29 a.m., a single-vehicle collision occurred on the overpass of Charlesgate over Commonwealth Ave. Witnesses at the scene and surveillance footage indicate a an orange Porsche 718 Cayman traveling northbound on Charlesgate, in the rightmost lane on the Phillip G. Bowker Overpass. Footage shows the vehicle veering suddenly off the overpass at high speeds, colliding with a nearby tree. The driver, male, approximately mid-to-late twenties, was injured and unresponsive when authorities arrived. Airbag w/out seatbelt deployed successfully. Driver was quickly transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment, there identified as Ilya Grigoryevich Rozanov. No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the collision.

It is the weirdest shit. He has to duck out of practice because his nose starts bleeding twice in one week and he wakes up in a hotel in Columbus with another one that leaves stains on the pillow. On the flight back to Ottawa, Hazy drops into the seat next to Ilya midflight and asks, "This isn't, like, a cocaine thing, right?"
Ilya laughs so hard it's probably a little rude.

Ilya hadn’t known the video existed. If he had known, he would have paid someone to have it destroyed. Would have paid someone to murder Kuznetsov, maybe, just for redundancy's sake. But it was peak stupidity, to keep evidence of your homosexual perversion around in a country where that crime could get you sent to jail for several decades, and Ilya hadn’t thought that Kuznetsov would be that dumb.
Now here Ilya was, watching a video of his fourteen-year-old self on Twitter getting fucked by his former hockey coach.
So. There go the plans for the rest of his life.

Post-cottage 2017 season Ilya goes missing for a night after a Raiders/Metros game in Boston. Shane becomes entangled in the police investigation. In the wake of the fallout from this incident Shane and Ilya must try to pick up the pieces and return back to normal life as external forces threaten to pull them apart. The weight of their identities, responsibilities, and love for each other clash as they confront how they can overcome the obstacles in front of them; real and imagined. Desperately clinging to each other as their relationship is pushed to the limit.
A bit of an angsty slow-burn. There’s fluff/comfort/smut eventually I promise. I wouldn’t torment you for so long without paying it off in the end. Mostly canon-compliant. Takes place between HR and TLG. Leans more TV show than book but Ilya is back in his penthouse. Check tags for TWs.
