Summary
Peter’s apartment smells like dust and soy sauce and webfluid. It’s got the same terrible green backsplash tiles in the kitchen and the same crowded, clumsy bookcases that Johnny has always tended to organize for fun. The same sneakers sit by the door: black Nikes meant for skateboarding that Peter’s had since they were teenagers, now so well-worn that the soles are duct-taped to the sides. The same brown denim jacket hangs on the hook; coffee mug succulent sits in the window; black stain sprays up and out of a socket from that tiny electrical fire they’d set when they were high and rewiring Peter’s funky lava lamp while it was still plugged in.
It takes a weight off Johnny’s shoulders, being submerged in it: here is another thing that hasn’t changed. Peter is, at his core, the same.
He crosses to Peter’s deep, corduroy couch and tosses himself onto it.
Peter stands in front of Johnny, hovering in that white and black suit, mask now balled in his hand. His eyes are wide and his jaw is tight.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” is what Johnny says.

Summary
Ponyboy Curtis didn’t do drugs– or at least, he hadn’t before. Or maybe he still hadn’t, and all the fuzziness and blankness and distance between himself and the rest of the world was something else. Something… not drugs.
'Right,' Pony thought, his hand gripping a railing on a staircase he didn’t recognize, in a house he had never stepped foot in, 'but this is probably drugs.'
-
Months after the almost-murder of Bob Sheldon, Ponyboy has mostly gotten back to normal. Johnny is fine, he's fine, the not sleeping is fine, the fear of cold water is fine: he just has to convince everyone else of these facts, too.

Summary
“Everything okay?” Hen asks him when he reascends the stairs, plopping back down on his seat at the table next to Eddie.
Buck puts his head in his hands. “My mother is pimping me out to the women of Los Angeles.”
Chimney snort-coughs whatever’s in the mug he’s been sipping from.
“Come again?”
After another relationship blows up in his face, Buck does himself the generous favor of taking a vow of relationship-celibacy for the greater good of humanity. Then his parents skip back into town with a vengeance, his mother starts meddling in his love life, and Buck elects to find a fake girlfriend to get them off of his case. He's also in love with his best friend, but that's a minor detail.
Meanwhile, Eddie is losing his mind for completely separate reasons. Obviously.

Summary
May realised a very long time ago that Buck was basically her stepbrother. So, when the lightning strike finally provided the impetus for Bobby to admit that he also brought a kid into their family, she had every intention of seizing the opportunity to properly integrate Buck into the Grant-Nash family.
And, look, if in the process she also gains a brother-in-law… clearly the universe was just waiting for the opportunity to make that happen.
-
Or, the one where May ensures Buck is enfolded properly into the Grant-Nash clan, which means Bobby (and by extension the firefam, because gossip) suddenly gets significantly more insight into the inner workings of the Buckley-Diaz family, and all roads lead to Buddie…

"Harvey will someday soon be a lawyer, and he knows about the nature of contracts; he knows that nothing is implicit. But he also knows that these things can be argued, and an implicit part of his contract with Mike is not just shelter and food and clothing. All of that collectively implies protection, from anything and everything which threatens Mike and, by association, Harvey."

Summary
"So," Eddie begins. "Let me see if I can remember. You've worked in a dude ranch, done construction work, went to bartending school, did some Navy SEAL training, tended bar in like, in a bunch of cities, and, um- I feel like there's so much more you haven't told me."
"I used to walk dogs too. Oh, and work in an old book shop."
And yeah, there's so much he hasn't told Eddie yet. Maybe it's because Buck doesn't want him to know about the long nights spent sleeping in the backseat of the Jeep, and the loneliness and the fact that everywhere he went he just felt like he was going in circles, trying desperately to find a place where he'd belong. He doesn't want to tell him about the uncertainty and the fear of not being able to find whatever he was looking for. Also, maybe it's because he finds the frown in Eddie's face funny, like it still bothers him not to know everything about him.In which Buck is totally not having a crisis about turning thirty, Eddie throws him a birthday party, Buck likes keeping secrets about his past, and they're both idiots who refuse to talk about their feelings.

"So why not tell him, then?"
He doesn’t want to hear the words he’ll know will come, the same words he said to Taylor, when she noticed that his entire life was meaningful relationships: it’s not the same.
He smiles at May, knowing that it’s nothing but a sad smile. Some days it feels like there’s no joy in any part of him except the pieces he siphons from Eddie and Christopher whenever he’s allowed into their orbit. “Because it’ll hurt.”---

Summary
“You okay, Christopher?” Buck asks when Christopher hasn’t said a single word since getting out of the car.
“Yeah,” Christopher says, not taking his eyes off the view. “I just feel so…small.”
Buck and Eddie exchange a quick glance.
“In a good way or a bad way?” Eddie asks.
“Good, I think,” Christopher whispers, reaching for both of their hands.
“It’s a little overwhelming, isn’t it?” Buck asks, and both Christopher and Eddie nod.
Eddie kneels down on one knee and wraps both of his arms around his son, squeezing him tightly. He’s so much taller than Eddie when he does this now, almost a full head, and still growing like a weed.
“I love you so much,” he murmurs, “and I’m so glad we’re here together.”
“Me too,” Christopher says, tugging on Buck’s hand that he’s still holding onto, the other arm wrapped around Eddie’s neck. “All three of us.”
Eddie looks up at Buck, who’s watching them with so much warmth in his eyes it takes Eddie’s breath away a little.
“Yeah,” he manages to get out, still looking at Buck, who’s smiling now.~

Summary
“Number 14, Ponyboy Curtis, leading the heat as they round the first curve,” the announcer's voice crackles, booming over the stadium speaker.
The sun beats down on bleachers packed with spectators, whooping and screaming as the boys on the track round the first bend, their arms pumping, legs extended, sneakers slapping on the ground. Darry squints and, sure as shit, Pony is right there on the inside, an arm’s length in front of the guy behind him and pulling even more ahead by the second.
“Run, Pony!” Darry hollers, joining the clamor of voices and banging his hands together. “GO!”
Darry keeps hollering as Pony inches ahead more and more, the clear leader. By the time the group makes it to the far side of the track, he knows that Pony’s gonna take first place - but Coach Anderson taught him well enough that a win’s not a win til the buzzer roars, so he keeps on screaming as if Pony could fall behind any second.
Boy howdy, has his kid brother gotten fast since the last track meet Darry made it out to.
---
In which Darry goes to Pony's track meet, gets vicarious revenge on Paul Holden, and contemplates his little brother growing up.Bookmarked by everanoptimist

Bookmarker's Notes
" In between his races, Pony looks eagerly at the stands, finding Darry each time and waving with an enthusiasm that would be embarrassing if it wasn’t so endearing. Once, a mother sitting nearby catches the interaction and glances at Darry with amusement, clearly entertained by the way the tough Greaser on the top row waves back indulgently for the third time that hour.
Pony’s always had a little less “hood” in him than the rest of them do. Darry’s never cared less about his rep than he does seeing Pony smile each time he finds him."
