Daichi knows that Hinata accidentally called him ‘Dad’ once, and Suga often teases him about parenting the first-years, but this is just ridiculous.
“I’m not your dad, I’m your captain!” Daichi protests.
The cheering only increases in volume. They’re probably disturbing anyone who’s still at the school – but then, it’s New Year’s Eve. Nobody is still at the school besides Daichi’s insane, ridiculous, wonderful team.
“Okay, fine,” he says at last, raising his hands in surrender. “I’m proud to be your dad.”

Kageyama muttered something far too quiet for Suga to make out. At least, he hoped that was the case. He had sort of caught a few words, but he had to have misheard, because what it had sounded like, what it had sounded like was—
“I beg your pardon?” said Suga.
“I said they’re of the captain,” said Kageyama.
“I… beg your pardon,” said Suga. He’d definitely heard Kageyama that time, which was odd, because the words he’d heard were clearly incorrect. Maybe he needed to get his hearing tested. All that time spent around Noya and Tanaka and Hinata screaming in his ears—
“The pictures are of the captain,” Kageyama said, a little slower this time, as if he too had concerns about Suga’s hearing.
“Don’t be silly,” said Suga, because what else was there to say? It was impossible. It was totally absurd. As if Daichi would ever—as if Daichi would ever—
And at the same time his heart-rate spiked a little and he thought hmm, interesting, and felt deeply ashamed of himself.

Daichi looked up from his reading at Suga’s sudden words.
“What?”
“I said I’m going to die soon,” he repeated calmly.
The setter, who was lying on his back on the bed, rolled over onto his side and looked down at where Daichi was sitting on the floor. Daichi set down his book beside him. Suga gave him a small smile. Daichi frowned.
“Don’t say that.”
“Why not? Because it’s true?” When Daichi didn’t reply, Suga reached out and tousled his hair. “I’m sorry. I know it’s hard for you to hear me say things like that. But it helps me come to terms with it. Do you understand?”
Daichi closed his eyes and sighed. “I do.”
When Suga is diagnosed with cancer, it takes everything in Daichi's power to accept that within the year his best friend would no longer be alive.
