Eddie didn’t answer right away. He simply looked at Buck, eyes dark and unreadable behind the distorted glass. Then he raised one hand and pressed his fingers against the barrier between them, the tips of them ghosting over the surface like he was remembering how it felt to touch something real. He tapped once. Then again.

The sound was delicate, but it echoed like a bell in Buck’s head.

Jack had just stepped back onto the main floor when he clocked movement at the ambulance entrance, two guys hurrying in, the smaller one helping a guy with a sweatshirt covered in blood. But something was wrong, some unnamable instinct rising within Jack at the way they moved. It was too fluid, too controlled. Jack knew what the walking wounded looked like, had seen it for years, from war zones to bar fights. This wasn't the injured seeking help; this was men hunting.
Time slowed, Jack's heart rate spiking, the adrenaline dump casting everything in sharp relief—the full ED floor, patients plus shift change meaning twice the usual personnel were here.
Robby was here.
That thought got him moving, Jack approaching laterally. He got there right as the guns came out.

The email sits opened in Eddie’s inbox. Mocking him. He really should blame Pepa - she’s the one who convinced him to sign up for the project months ago and of course he happily obliged. He’d do anything to see Pepa smile at him.
But now he’s stuck with an email, a segue way to an obligation. It’s not that he didn’t think it was possible - he saw Pepa cycle through a few projects now from Loose Ends recipients. They were mostly lacy things, finicky crochet work that wasn’t his cup of tea. He assumes by now that that’s the way of it, most people left with their great-grandmother’s table runners and doilies half-finished.
Eddie thought that his knitting skills would keep him from following through on his promise. Not that he’s one to break promises - he knows he’ll answer the email, that he’ll make this happen. It’s just the notion of finishing a project left behind by someone’s loved one, that’s the part he’s stuck on.
