“What is that?” Wilbur asks, nodding to whatever intricate thing Tubbo is assembling. There’s already a stack of them in a glass case across the room, but he doesn’t see any immediate use for them, only knows that there must be one. Every twist of Tubbo’s fingers is calculated.
“They’re pieces,” Tubbo answers tersely.
“For?” Wilbur asks, nearly missing the days when Tubbo clung to his leg and never closed his mouth, yelling excitedly about the trees he was going to climb and the mobs he was going to slay, words so easy to coax that they didn’t seem worth anything at the time.
Tubbo hesitates for a beat of silence before answering. “Nukes.”

In his bones, the ache of loneliness has set in. Worse than that, the seatbelt digs into his ribs and one of his arms is twisted uncomfortably. Broken, maybe. The ship has realigned, and he can hear the dinging warning of oxygen leaks and damage, flashing red lights, but he lets his head drop to his chest. He closes his eyes.
Tommy is alone.

Yet, here Ranboo is, loitering in the Whitehouse hallway after hours, his tail skittering nervously across the carpet as he psychs himself up to knock. It’s one in the morning, but bright yellow light spills out from under the door.
It’s now or never. He swallows hard. “Tubbo? Are you still awake?”
There’s a crash and a rustling of papers. “Hang on…don’t come in here. I’m–I’m getting dressed.”
“Okay? Are you okay?”
“Yes–nothing’s going on–just give me a minute–”
He waits, eyes enormous, until the door swings open, framing the shorter boy. He’s holding a folder against his chest, covering it securely with both hands. His blazer is off, but his white shirt underneath is still buttoned to the collar.
