Louis returned the smile politely.

“Everyone who comes to Auvergne is,” Lestat fixed him with a knowing smile. “The mountains are excellent at keeping secrets.”
Louis has a university education and no experience in dealing with children. That doesn't stop him from traveling thousands of miles, to Auvergne, to become Claudia de Lioncourt's new live-in governor.

They spend the better part of the morning like that—working quietly and soaking up the feeling of each other’s presence. Vein responds to emails and looks through work-related documents with as much enthusiasm as a death row inmate, but the experience is made less tedious every time Xia Fei fidgets against him. Even the low, monotonous drawl of the applied physics lecture is welcome. It’s soothing background noise, punctuated every so often by the gentle sighs that leave Xia Fei’s lips.
Or, it is soothing background noise until it stops suddenly and Vein feels Xia Fei staring at him.
“Taking a break?”
When Vein looks at him, he’s surprised to see worry etched into his brow. He’d figured Xia Fei’s fidgeting was out of irritation with his schoolwork, but there’s more to it than that. On closer inspection, Vein notices that the skin around Xia Fei’s thumbs has been picked raw.
“Uh. Kind of. Boss?”

Summary
A 15 years old Luka is repeatedly told that everything he achieved must've been thanks to his parents and not years worth of his meticulous hard work. By then he knows better than to argue and just smiles. A 23 years old Luka thinks that despite everything his parents must've raised him right, because here he is, relishing in the blindingly bright spotlight, rich, famous and successful.
Luka at 27 thinks that if his parents were kinder, he might've learned that there is more to life than numbers and contracts and vocal exercises, but what does he know. Luka has a carefully crafted career to uphold, and it requires him to maintain his facade. Is it a facade if that's just what he has been this entire time?
Luka doesn't know.

Ivan leaned his head against the door he had held open. “And?” He knew Till wanted to be invited in, but Ivan would rather not give him the easy way out.
“It gets really awkward when she visits Luka.” Till explained further, hands in his pockets while he dug his shoe into the outside floor.
Black eyes followed Till’s gaze down to his feet, then quickly focused back to the man in front of him. “How come?” He must have asked in an insinuating way judging by the fit of rage that seemed to coarse through Till. He wasn’t about to say Hyuna and Luka might have sex, but he certainly also wouldn’t admit Hyuna was a bit mean and teased Till to make him mad.
Not that Ivan was any better on that front.

Luka laughs.
It bubbles up in his throat and spills through his lips without his consent, a stream of giggles, as tears prick at the corners of his eyes. It’s hilarious. Snap his wrist, and he’ll finally have a distraction from the pain splitting his skull. He’ll finally have something else to think about, and an excuse to miss classes for a day, and a good enough reason to have painkillers pumped into his veins until everything is completely, blissfully, numb.
“Do it,” he begs. “Hyuna, do it.”
