It was filthy, torn and the messy lettering barely legible.
The cold February wind still whipped around him and Taerae tightened his wet coat to his body.
He squinted at the paper as his glasses fogged up from his hot breath.

The words were evidently nonsense, written in english characters but not spelling out any english words Taerae had ever seen.

Confined in a small snowy college town in the mountains, Kim Taerae doesn't do much besides study and hang out with his his best-friend-maybe-lover Seok Matthew.
One day in late January, he starts seeing paper hearts everywhere he goes, in trees, floating on the wind, or pinned to his bathroom mirror.
With the snowy mountain weather getting worse and Valentine's Day approaching fast, Taerae and Matthew start to uncover the dark secrets of their once-peaceful town.

There’s a moment where Taki leans in, leans down to Harua’s mouth and Harua catches herself before their lips can touch. “No kissing, okay?” She ignores the way Taki's face falls, like her favorite pillow had been stolen. “We’re just helping each other, right?” She cradles Taki’s cheeks until she nods. “Kissing is for feelings and we don't need to complicate things.”
Because it means something to Harua. Because it implies feelings and promises that Harua doesn't want to commit herself to. She's kissed too many people who didn't want what she wanted, where what she was trying to say got tied around her tongue. Boys who thought she owed them something. Girls who laughed it away the next day. She doesn’t want that with Taki, doesn’t want to mess them up in a way that can’t be fixed.

Summary
Catch-and-release practices are encouraged in recreational fishing to prevent damaging local aquatic ecosystems and preserve fish populations. It is a process as simple as its name: you catch, and then you release. You unhook the barb from the fish's mouth, take your photo, and then gently slide the fish back into the water. You celebrate your prize, but you do not keep it.
That was, supposedly, the more humane way to do things, Matthew was told.
There’s only one way that these sort of things end.
