"Nothing tried to eat me today, so it was fine."
Cassian had asked her a simple question about her day—How was the library?—the kind of question people asked each other all the time. He'd caught her in the hallway between her room and the stairs.
Nesta had answered like it was a test, and then she'd looked like she'd already failed.
He watched her face carefully, saw the exact moment she registered his expression shifting. Her shoulders drew back, that familiar defensive armor sliding into place—the armor he'd tried to hammer through a hundred times with challenges and provocations and frustrated demands that she just try harder.
But there was something else there too, something that made his chest constrict—a flicker of confusion, maybe even hurt, quickly shuttered behind those steel-blue eyes.
"What?" The word came out sharper than she probably intended. She took a step back from him. "What did I say wrong?"
