Summary
Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov’s lives revolved around risk.
Shane built a life around studying it, learning it, and trying to defeat it after an unexpected accident shattered his dreams. Ilya flirted with it, danced around it, but kept it at arm’s length, and never allowed it to penetrate his hardened exterior.
At 17, they were on the precipice of a future forever in each other’s orbit until fate, cruelty and circumstance snatched it all away from them. At 29, they found themselves in each other’s lives again.

It was like something out of a movie. A car pulled up, straight out of the 50’s like everything he’d imagined about Cuba. It was teal, shiny and topless, the fins sleek and long in the back. It rolled to a stop and turned off, its driver stepping out and fluidly closing the door behind him.
Ian’s eyes started from the top and worked down. The man’s skin was pale, a touch of pink across his nose and cheeks. His black hair was slicked back, his button-down Hawaiian shirt open at the throat and to the top of his chest. He walked with purpose and swagger, and it seemed Ian wasn’t the only one who was paying attention.
Ian had thought that he’d seen all of the beauty this country had to offer, but it seemed he’d only scratched the surface.

I have actually wanted to do a 90s AU for a long time now, but with the recent passing of Scott Weiland, I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. The title of this fic is actually from a Stone Temple Pilots song called "Trippin' On A Hole In A Paper Heart," which is one of my fave songs by them (it's on the playlist).
