“Steve?” Someone asks, but he doesn’t know who. The lights are too bright and the air smells like antiseptic and he just needs a second—“Steve.”
“I’m fine,” he says reflexively.
There’s an incredulous scoff that Steve instantly recognizes as belonging to Nancy. “Forgive me if I don’t believe you.” Footsteps—more than one pair—are following after him. Steve doesn’t stop, his gaze zeroed in on the elevator.
“You’re forgiven,” he snaps.
“Steve,” Nancy says, grabbing his arm and pulling him to a stop. “When was the last time you slept?”
