Summary
Tenna could hear the kitchen. The clatter of plates. The deep rumble of Asgore’s voice, rising—then flattening into something hoarse. Toriel’s sharper. Less like a yell, more like a scab picked sore too many times. Kris would wander in, shoulders stiff, and press their cheek to the static. Sometimes, if the TV was warm from recent use, the glass would fog. They’d breathe slow. Not watching anything. Just being close.
He’d glow soft blue beneath them. He always kept his volume low. Just enough to give them something steady. He thought of himself, in those times, as a nightlight. Something for a scared kid to feel near when they didn’t want to cry.
And then, sometimes, Kris would draw.
Little stick figures with marker right on the screen. Green for themselves. Brown for Noelle. Big loopy lines for antlers. Red for Dess. a big triangle with gashing spikes . Toriel would scold them gently when she caught them, but she never got angry. She’d say, “Markers are for paper,” and Kris would shrug and say “Okay,” and do it again next week.

“Can I continue with my narration?” she asks at last, tone deceptively light.
He scowls again, though she can likely hear it in the silence before he answers. “Do what you want. My version won’t stop being the truth.” His eyes flick toward her briefly, sharp and unimpressed. “Don’t dress up a lie, Rouge.”
She places a hand dramatically against her chest. “Please.”
Then she lifts her chin, nose in the air, every inch of her posture theatrical. “Have some faith,” Rouge replies airily. “I know how to tell a story.”
“That is precisely what concerns me.”
She smiles at that—slow, satisfied.
Because she does know how to tell a story.
And he has the uncomfortable feeling that, whether he participates or not, she is about to tell his for him.

Or; there are some truths you can’t hide. And being in love is one of them. Either he tells his own, or it’s gets written for him. That is a lesson Shadow must learn to defend.

He doesn’t. “Rouge,” he says, voice taut, almost impatient. “I keep telling you that nothing else happened. We raced…” He lets the words hang, letting her feel the pause. “…and I won.” He stresses the last word, hard enough for her to take notice. I won.
Because—
Who the hell wins against Sonic? She seems to realize this, because the words sink in, her eyes go comically wide, hand flying to her mouth in a flash.

Against the night sky, he’d be so easy to miss if not for the streaks of red cutting through his fur. Well, that and the emerald he holds with the reverence of the world, setting his face aglow with fragments of brilliant green.
A shadow. His shadow; the upturn of his quills more reminiscent of his super form, but the same sure smirk and fire in his eyes that gives Sonic pause. His fur appears a velvety midnight, almost, a satiny shimmer that follows the arc of his arm as he holds the emerald up, wide eyed and dangerous.
Sonic Adventure 2 (and some beyond) retold in so many words.

Sonic pulls tinsel garlands, and, if he's remembering right- yes, matching packs of battery powered lights, and some holly garlands, and he lines them up on the sweaters, halved on each one, to form a heart.
Sonic says, "There, like that."
Shadow says, "God." And clasps his paws in front of his face. He looks like he's waiting for the punchline.
Sucks to suck.
Sonic says, "I said ugly, dude, it's awesome."
Shadow takes a slow, deep breath.
Then he sets his paws down, "Alright, fine, let's do this. How are we attaching it?"

The nightmare always starts the same.
The Tornado idling on a field, red metal gleaming in the sun, an excited Tails flying circles around one of the wings.
Last minute adjustments, he shouts.
Take your time, Sonic shouts back.
He is balancing on top of a low ledge, not even looking up. He hasn't looked up once ever since arriving here, ever since noticing the plane and the bags and hearing the engine purr relentlessly. Out of the corner of his eyes he can see his little brother zipping back and forth, can hear his excited chatter, low and muffled as if reaching him through glass. He concentrates on his shoes and on the thin ledge he is pacing on.
Up and down. Up and down.
I'm done, Tails calls.
Great, Sonic calls back.

After the events of Sonic Frontiers Tails has left for his own adventure and Sonic is happy for his little brother. Everything is fine. Great even.
Now if his mind would just stop playing tricks on him...

“Alright, whatever…” Sonic muttered, groaning as he sat himself up properly. “What’s… What’s going on?” He squinted at Shadow. “…I’m supposed to know you, aren’t I?”

Knowing Shadow won't let it go, Sonic finally tells him about something that is personal and very not happy-go-lucky
Featuring Sonic pretending everything is A-Ok when there's clear cracks on the surface, Shadow taking a break from his trauma to grill it out of Sonic, and both of them having weird romantic tension.

His expression must've given away how much he rakes his brain over this, because Sonic, noticing he doesn’t catch on, smiles wryly and adds: “That someone was you, by the way. I’m talking about you.”

“It took till Metal overthrew Eggman for me to snap outta it. Tails and Knux had to locate me in the middle of a desert to deliver his message, otherwise I wouldn't even have known about it until it was too late,” Sonic finishes. That's also when Sonic and he ran into each other again for the first time after Shadow’s reawakening, the hybrid realizes silently.”

Summary
In the stretch of winter, Sonic and Shadow come together under the realization that they’re dealing with the same issue: Lonliness.
Slow season typically has Sonic hanging with his friends all the time, but now he has to bob and weave around their busy schedules. Rouge recently moved out of Shadow’s apartment with him, and he’s trying to be okay with living alone again.
But when Sonic kisses Shadow, things feel different. Exciting. They meld into this new relationship, navigating grief, quirks, and each other’s bodies.

Summary
What if you had the chance to walk into your past and change everything?
When a battle with the baddie of the week becomes a Master Emerald-sized problem, Shadow and Sonic are in the heart of it. Now able to transport more than just sandwiches with his portals, the Sandomancer uses his newfound power to send Shadow on a dive through reality. Sonic attempts to save him and gets pulled along for the ride. They find themselves in a place that’s both familiar and completely foreign: Space Colony ARK, as it stood fifty years ago. As alarm bells start to ring, there’s no mistaking the date. Shadow’s priority is to get the hell out as soon as possible, and survive being stuck with Sonic for company, until he comes across a familiar sight. A black and red hedgehog running with a girl he knows like his own heartbeat.
Chaos, they’re so young.
Priorities change, and so does everything else.

Summary
Shadow looks at Sonic like he’s the sun, with blazing anger and contempt, and yet he complains in his absence. He looks most intently when Sonic leaves, and behind his eyes Tails can almost see the rumination with which one looks at a sunset, almost as if he’s wondering how he’d never seen someone like this before.
Sonic looks at Shadow as if he’s the moon, cresting and waning in his light and vulnerability, soft, hidden adoration behind narrowed eyes. A thousand stars shine around him but he gazes just at Shadow, commenting fleetingly on small craters or how the light shines on his face.
If that isn’t love, albeit buried under contempt, Tails doesn’t know what is.
(or, five times that someone notices that Sonic and Shadow are in love and one time they do something about it)
