Vatican City is landlocked.
Of course, Vatican City is not far from the coast, by any means, but the point still remained that no matter which way he turned, there was not an ocean in sight ... the abstract concept of something in the distance often does nothing to satisfy the need for it.
(Perhaps that was his problem with God.)
And of course, needing and longing and yearning were all feelings that he tried to stamp out. His needs were not at all important when he stood in the shadow of the cross; his life was meant to be in service of others, constant and unwavering.

When Thomas Lawrence came by the papal apartments that evening, he came, unsurprisingly, with a bundle of papers under his arm.
Vincent tried on and discarded four separate teasing comments about it, but didn’t get to decide on one before Thomas silently handed them over, and he realized they were newspapers, opened and refolded over the weekly comics, his favorite. Three of them, one for each week he’d been away.
Ah, he thought, with the feeling of a sudden hard deceleration in his chest, the press it put on his heart. Ah. All right then.

Thomas wonders what it says about him that one of those means more than the other— and what it means that this does not bother him as it should, this blasphemous thought, this sacrilegious reprioritization.
“I do not wish to argue with you, my dear Vincent,” Thomas says, voice quiet. “Your concern is kind, but— I am afraid this is only how I am.”
Vincent squeezes his hands.
“You are not your punishments,” Vincent tells him, firm, warm, insistent. “You are not your denial. You are not your sacrifice, Thomas, nor your hunger. You are not your starvation.” His hands shake Thomas’s, a rattle to keep his attention. “You are Thomas. You are human, and you are starving, and you should not be.”
