    The sound of laughter echoes from within the manor, and he can’t help himself from glancing inside. It’s bright, is the first thing he notices. The second is the amount of kids dotted around. There’s at least eight wandering around, most completely unfamiliar. They’re all dressed up for the holidays and, they look happy. It’s weird to think that in a different life, Jason may be inside that room too.

    And the worst part is he could do it, he could knock on the door and change it all.

    Dick was every bit as evasive in conversation as he was in combat. Just as flashy, too, in the ways he could distract you. Dick didn’t lie often but he was good at it when he needed to be. Primarily because he lied almost exclusively through omission, which he practiced like an art form. You could ask the man the color of the sky and he’d launch into a twenty-minute monologue regarding the importance of flossing your teeth after every meal. A couple of jokes and a brief interlude of witty banter later and suddenly the sky was purple, and you had a new found enthusiasm for oral hygiene.

    Saying those words out loud makes Annabeth’s stomach growl. She feels nauseous, which she figures probably is not just psychological, all things considered. She has no idea what she’s going to do about this yet, but saying the word father actually makes it feel like a baby for the first time. She lifts her gaze to take in her friends’ stunned expressions, their matching o-shaped mouths and wide eyes.
    “Percy Jackson?” Piper gasps. “Percy your-best-fucking-friend Jackson?”
