Summary
Everything was still foggy for Daniel. Things had improved the last few years, brought him moments of clarity between the hours of floaty confusion, a befuddlement that was more numb than distressing lately. But sometimes it felt as though all he had gained was the ability to see his shortcomings with more clarity. At least when all he thought about was his city, there wasn’t time to feel stupid or inferior or childlike. Though he still spent most of his time with his models, they no longer consumed his every waking second, giving him plenty of time to chart all the compulsions and paranoia of his ailed mental state— how his memories cut out after a few blurry seconds, how he wandered aimlessly, how he couldn’t tell he needed to feed until he was weak and delirious, how he saw people that weren’t there out of the corners of his eyes, how every thought slipped by on a stream of hazy confusion too fast for him to latch onto. Just better enough to know he’d never really get better.

Summary
Daniel was quintessentially American. It was almost charming, really, that unpolished air about him. Paris couldn’t have made his boy like this, just a bit too much, a little too loud, too brash, too rough, too cocky and overconfident. The inherent youthfulness that seemed to come easily to inhabitants of a country just now reaching its bicentennial and far too wrapped up in its own significance. Americanism was gaudy like plastic pearls and fake gold patinaed with wear and processed foods Armand couldn’t recognize as edible.
They were in Las Vegas now, a pinnacle of American excess, neon signs and windowless casinos full of lights and sounds and drinking and cigarette smoke, gamblers and dealers and bouncers all yelling over one another. Pure, unadulterated American desperation. He’d chased Daniel all the way here, and once he caught him he dragged him up to this penthouse suite. It’d been a week and neither of them had bothered running yet. The architecture here intrigued him, the distinctly space- age consumerist tilt of the Googie style a culmination of a hundred different distinct Americanisms that Armand could spend months pulling apart.

Daniel knew plenty well that he wasn’t really capable of being a good dad, as that was a title generally reserved for people who experienced the full spectrum of human emotion and didn’t get through the day with a carefully crafted routine of prescription medication abuse. But he wasn’t a mean dad. She was his baby girl and his best friend and the only person in the world who didn’t just see him as a blanket of pathetic, pitiful fuckups covering up a morbid, soulless core. Armand liked him, sure, and so did Alice on a really good day, but there would always be a chasm between them where Daniel’s love was supposed to go. He scared her, and that should’ve bothered him, but instead he just found himself using it more and more to get what he wanted. In the best case scenario, Daniel would never be anything more than a nagging voice in the ear of his wife or an interview subject, or to Armand, an especially fascinating beetle. But no matter how upset he was, how he lost his temper at himself or Alice or the situation they were in, there was always a smile on his face when Kate looked at him. Always.

Summary
Daniel saw Armand even when he wasn’t really there. Armand liked that. It was as though Daniel’s mind was always seeking him out, no matter how far he was. Always looking for him. Even when he was two countries away, Daniel would see him in the corner of his bedroom, real enough to touch.
Currently, Armand was sitting in the hallway of this cheap hotel, the thin carpet grayed out and worn away down the center by thousands of footsteps. He could hear Daniel quite easily, and all it took was a brief glimpse into his mind and he could see through his eyes as well. Daniel was sitting in the center of an uncomfortable and not especially clean bed. He’d scored about an hour ago, and was still enjoying the effects of that, alongside a handle of vodka sitting on the nightstand. Armand could tell from here that he smelled like sweat and alcohol and stale cigarettes. That he hadn’t showered or changed his clothes in a week. That he hadn’t eaten in two days. That he wasn’t sure whether they were in France, Italy, or Germany right now.
