    Fertility is a fickle thing. Eridians, in spite—or maybe because—of their long lifespan, are only fertile for a hundred years or so.

    Rocky anticipates this will be his last clutch. He asks Grace for a favor.

    “Remind me why, uh, why we can’t throw together a little xenonite box, stick a silicon heating pad and a thermometer in there, and call it a day?”

    ‹… Can,› Rocky says, hesitantly. He spins around to put the model down, leaving the two xenonite figurines coupled together, presumably in singular ecstasy or whatever. Joined forever. How romantic.

    ‹But is… not ideal. Many problems put in nut shell: Once cryo-protectant injected and cooling to 40°C complete, even short 4° internal temperature fluctuation kill egg.›

    My fatigue is so heavy, but void has not taken me yet. I raise a claw to meet his hand across the xenonite, and the cold that seeps through is sharp and alerting. I do not think of sleeping alone, of shriveled eggs and silent halls. I think of Grace, right before me. I want to wrap myself around his frigid softness until the boiling terror in my blood is soothed. I want to stay awake and here with him forever.

     

    In which Rocky gets whumped by unwanted eggs, and Grace is his ice pack.

    “Um, Rock?” I put down my burrito and lick the lingering droplet of salsa off my lower lip. “Maybe I can feed you instead?”

    Rocky’s claw quivers. “Why, question?”

    “Come on, you’re suffering! My hands are… soft.”

    Likely the softest thing that has ever touched him, now that I think about it.

    “I think they'd feel nicer against your damaged mucosal lining than your rock-hard claws! I could be… gentle.” My voice trails off. I must be out of my mind to be suggesting something like that, even if my intentions are pure. There’s no noble cause that warrants my being anywhere near his one-hole-does-it-all. Is there?

    Or

    After they finally got comfortable eating around each other, Grace feeds Rocky. That just might change their entire relationship.

    “Hey! It’s a lot up here, okay? It’s a normal response to stress.” He rubs a hand over his face. “Okay, I cried a lot down there, too. But not in class! Not if I could help it. But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.

    I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.
