Some people have the ability to occasionally see and dream of red threads of fate. Light Yagami can't even imagine himself being happy with a soulmate, until, while working on a case, he meets the great detective L.

Light noted the accent, perfect, that he had expected to sound foreign. He noted the polite tone, the way it translated despite the synthesized voice. He noted the usage of first person. "I’m going to solve this case". He and he alone, as if the room hanging on to his words were mere side characters. Light found himself offended for a second. A second later, he was pleased by the idea. L, the lone paragon of justice, was as egotistical as any other. He smiled at it like it was a private joke.
