“No,” Yang says, slapping an open palm against the table in unconscious mimicry of his father when he wants to drive home a point. “No. No more wedding talk. Not today. I beg you.”
They’re out on the back gazebo, crowded together around a rickety metal table Yang and Tian have dragged up the steps. Mei and Fu have been put to bed, and the older generation has settled into bedrooms and offices and parlors for the evening. The night air is fresh with the smell of recent rain, and the moon is nearly full. There’s a small bottle of baijiu and a pot of chrysanthemum tea on the table, which wobbles anytime someone picks up a cup and threatens to overturn when Yang slaps it. Tian sighs at him and gets down on his hands and knees, pulling a handkerchief out of his pocket to try to balance the legs.
“You’ll ruin your pants,” Pin warns. Jiu looks alarmed and drops down next to Tian; one of his guiding principles is that Tian should never be put out in any way and also that Tian should not be allowed anywhere near a home-repair project, no matter how minor.

Out of the corner of his eyes, he can see his uncle stopping to look at him, eyes narrowed in confusion. Li Ming doesn’t do chores unless he’s asked to, and his uncle knows that. Of course.
Li Ming wills his head to not look at Jim to gauge his reaction, even though every fibre of his being wants to sneak a peek and assess the situation.
Eventually, Jim concedes defeat, chuckling.
“What’s gotten into our house’s child? Why is he suddenly cleaning without being asked?” Jim asks, smiling.
OR 4 times Li Ming asks the older queers in his family for relationship advice, and 1 time one of them asks him.
