It wasn’t a whole lot of information, the listing had been up for nearly a month now and Nick wondered why. The place looked nice, had a great price and the LGBTQ+ friendly statement didn’t detour him at all.
Feeling rather brave, he sent off an email.

Summary
There’d been a change recently in Alex’s demeanor, the once happy kid was now turning into a more solemn and mellow teenager. He reminded Charlie so much of Tori, it was somewhat alarming and concerning. Despite Charlie and Nick’s questions and care, Alex mostly shrugged them off claiming he was fine.
And Charlie knew all too well not to push if things really weren’t fine. If they saw signs that really concerned them, they’d step in, but for now Nick and Charlie were waiting for their youngest to come to them if he really needed to.

Nick Nelson didn’t believe in love.
It wasn’t some stupid thing either, it was a lesson he’d learned from his entire life. Even when he was five years old, watching his parents fight all of the time before they eventually divorced, he knew all love ever did was hurt people. He knew how sad his mum was, how angry David became and how easily his dad just fucked off.
It wasn’t any better when Nick realised he had feelings for girls and then boys, either. Out of the three girls he kissed in secondary, two of them turned out to be queer, which fine, he didn’t really mind that. And the other one only kissed him to make another boy jealous. Which was all sorts of hurtful, being used by someone just to further their own agenda. They never cared about Nick’s feelings in the slightest.

Try as he might, Charlie couldn’t quite quell his nerves.
He bit at his thumb nail, which was already bitten down more than enough. He pulled his hand away from his mouth, shaking his head slightly as he walked up to the office doors. He’d been inside the building a handful of times now, twice for interviews, and once for his orientation day, but he still checked the sign on the door, making sure he had the right address.
He’d also looked it up on Google maps again too, just in case he somehow forgot the directions. He was well aware of how stupid it might be for him to worry so much but it was his first official full day of work, he couldn’t afford to be late because he somehow forgot what building he was going into. He was also incredibly aware he was catastrophizing but therapy also taught him it was fine to catastrophize, as long as he knew that’s what it was.
He was fine, nothing was going to happen to him, he just had to keep that in mind.
(Or Charlie and Nick are living together in domestic bliss, but when Charlie starts a new job and Geoff retires, he finds himself struggling to stay on track.)

Admittedly, falling in love with my gay nerd co-worker bestie was not on my game plan.
Especially since I thought I was straight up until I realized my crush on said co-worker. I’ve probably been bisexual my whole life, but it took until I saw Charlie Spring to realize it. There were clues, or at least my mum seems to think so. My mild obsession with one of my male rugby camp counselors, my need to watch Pirates of the Caribbean over and over ad nauseam… The more I thought about it the more I realized getting butterflies in your stomach around a cute boy was a good indication that you might not be as straight as you once thought.
(Or Nick is in love with his co-worker and he word vomits about it for awhile)

Charlie tugged on Nick’s sleeve. “Are you sure you should be playing?” he asked in a low voice. “You sound awful.”
Nick rubbed his eyes. “I—”
“He’s fine,” said Harry, ploughing between them with all the courtesy of a sledgehammer. He slapped Nick’s back cheerfully. Nick stumbled under the impact, pressing a fist to his mouth to keep from coughing again. Seemingly oblivious, Harry added, “It’s just man flu innit. You can still throw a ball, can’t you Nick?”
“Yeah,” Nick said, grimacing. “I’m still good to play.”
After their last match is cut short by the weather, the Truham rugby team are up against St John’s for a second time. They’re determined to be at the top of their game. Except, struck down with a heavy, miserable cold, Nick’s feeling far from it.
When he insists on playing anyway, Charlie assumes it’s the idiot rugby lad in him. But what if there’s another reason?

Summary
Living mostly without Charlie for any period of time, Nick quickly came to realise, was hard.
It started off impossible.
He knew—at least part of him did—that it was better, to not just be helplessly watching Charlie suffer. He knew the sooner this happened, the better for Charlie, and the sooner it would be over. He knew Charlie had made the decision himself, and that Charlie truly believed this—being away from his family and friends, away from Nick, but with people who really knew how to help in a place he wouldn’t be judged—was the right, and maybe the only, thing to do.
Nick knew he hated this, regardless.
